Ruiz Hits Career Milestone in Victory Over Cortland

CORTLAND, N.Y. - With 3:45 left to go in the game, Plattsburgh State's Chris Ruiz hit a jumper to tie Cortland at 61. The basket not only capped off a huge comeback by the Cardinals, having never led throughout the contest and having trailed by as much as 12 points during the second half, but it also marked Ruiz's entrance into the Plattsburgh men's basketball record book as the 12th Cardinal cager to hit 1,000 career points. His official total is now 1,001. The Cardinals would go on to win the contest, 69-65.

Plattsburgh moves into second place in the State University of New York Athletic Conference with a record of 10-5, 15-7 overall. Cortland splits the no. 2 spot with Plattsburgh and Oneonta, and improves its season record to 14-8.

After Ruiz's jumper, Cortland would pull ahead again (63-61) but Plattsburgh answered quickly with a layup by Errol Daniyan and a three-pointer from Steve Thomas to take the lead back a final time. Farris Thomas would make two free-throws and Steve Thomas would add another from the charity stripe with seven second left to seal the victory for the Cardinals.

Steve Thomas ended the day atop the team for Plattsburgh with 23 points, while Ruiz added 21. Farris Thomas led the Cardinals with seven reboundsd, Ketema Brooks dished out three assists and Daniyan nabbed three steals.

For the Red Dragons, Ron Evans and Dustin Marshall led a balanced scoring effort with 14 points apiece. They were followed by Ben Nagle with 10 and Jesse Winter with nine. Nagle recorded a double-double, having also pulled down 11 boards.

Plattsburgh returns home to take on teh Potsdam Bears on Tuesday. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m.
