Cardinals Top Neumann, 3-1, in Women's Hockey

– Steph Moon, Brittany Meade and Megan DiJulio tallied two points a piece to lead the Plattsburgh State women’s hockey team to a 3-1 win over Neumann University in its first Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference West opener.  The No. 2 Cardinals improve to 2-0-0 with the Knights dropping to 2-1-0.

Meade took advantage of an early power play opportunity, scoring her first of the season to give Plattsburgh a 1-0 lead with only 1:36 gone in the first period. 

Moon scored the game-winner at 9:35 of the second period, with assists on the goal from Meade and DiJulio.  Teal Gove tacked on an insurance goal three minutes later from Moon and DiJulio, stretching the Cardinals’ lead to 3-0 after two periods.

Neumann broke up the shutout midway through the third period on Niki Blazenko’s third goal of the season.

Plattsburgh dominated Neumann, 45-10, in shots.  The Cardinals went 2-for-6 on the power play.

Mandy Mackrell recorded her second win of the season, making nine saves.  Knights’ goalie Shannon Donnelly made 42 stops in the loss.

The Cardinals will face off with Neumann again tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. for the second game of their weekend series.
