BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Plattsburgh State men's basketball team trailed for the majority of the game against State University of New York Athletic Conference opponent Buffalo State, but managed to push the game into overtime thanks to a last minute three-pointer by Danny Tangney. The Bengals would go onto to win the contest, however, 90-87.
The Cardinals now hold a record of 7-3, 2-1 in the SUNYAC, and Buffalo State is 2-5 overall, 1-1 in the conference.
The Bengals scored the first points of the night when Antonio Samedi sank a jumper 14 seconds into the first and would hold to the lead, despite a handful of times when the Cardinals pulled ahead by three or less, until the end of the second period when Tangney helped send the game into overtime.
During the overtime period, the two teams fought over the lead for the first three minutes. Buffalo State took a definitive six-point lead just before the final minute mark and held on, despite three-straight free-throws made by the Cardinals' Chris Ruiz (2) and Tangney (1).
All tallied, the Bengals out-shot the Cardinals 50.7-42.1% from the field and recorded 23 points off turnovers to Plattsburgh's 11. However, the Cardinals did capitalize on second-chance points, out-shooting the Bengals 18-6 in that category.
Ruiz and Steve Thomas both posted double-doubles for the Cards. Ruiz made 23 points and pulled down 11 boards, while Thomas matched Ruiz in rebounds and added 18 of his own points. Ruiz also tied Errol Daniyan with a team-high three steals. Daniyan was second the squad with 20 points and topped the team with three blocks.
Ketema Brooks dished out game-high seven assists for Plattsburgh.
Glenroy Carr sank 20 points and made 10 rebounds for the Bengals, while Jake Simmons led both teams with 24 points and four steals during the game.
The Cardinals close out their trip to the western portion of the state at Fredonia tomorrow. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
