Oswego Holds On for 3-2 Win

Lakers' First Season Sweep of Cardinals in Four Years

OSWEGO, N.Y. -Top-ranked Oswego State scored 34 seconds into the contest and then had to hang on for a 3-2 victory over visiting Plattsburgh State in a State University of New York Athletic Conference men's hockey game on Saturday before a sellout crowd of 3000 at the Lakers Campus Center. Oswego (20-1, 12-0 SUNYAC) sweeps a regular-season series from the Cardinals (13-3-4, 9-2-1) for the first time in four years. BOXSCORE

Neil Musselwhite found the back of the net less than a minute after the opening faceoff to give Oswego a 1-0 lead. Dylan Clarke equalized with an unassisted goal 6 minutes and 10 seconds later before Justin Fox put the Lakers back on top, 2-1.

In the second period, Jon Whitelaw gave the Lakers a little breathing room at 3-1 to chase Plattsburgh starting goaltender Josh Leis (9 saves). Ryan Williams (12 saves) came in for the final 34:07 and kept the high-scoring Oswego offense off the scoreboard.

In the third period, Phil Farrow cut the deficit by the final scoring margin as the Cardinals lost for the first time since Jan. 5.

The teams combined for 0-for-13 on the power play with Plattsburgh getting seven chances and Oswego, six.

Plattsburgh had several good scoring chances from close range by shooting wide, having the puck jump over a stick or getting robbed by Kyle Gunn-Taylor, who finished with 27 saves.

The Cardinals' bid to tie the game in the waning minutes diminished after getting whistled for their second too many men on the ice penalty at the 18:48 mark.
