NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Host Norwich University outscored Plattsburgh State 4-3 in the shootout to capture the PrimeLink Great Northern Shootout Tournament on Saturday at Kreitzberg Arena after the nationally ranked teams skated officially to a 1-1 overtime tie. Eric Satim forced the five-minute extra session when he scored his Plattsburgh-leading seventh goal of the season less than a minute into the third period. Vick Schlueter recorded an assist in the Cardinals scoring.
Norwich took a 1-0 lead on a Scott Schroeder breakaway just 26 seconds after the opening faceoff. Owen Carpino and Tyler Stitt were credited with assists on the play.
In the 10-round shootout, Plattsburgh had leads of 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2. Mike Kavanagh, Patrick Jobb and Chris Wieland scored for the Cardinals. But the Cadets won the tournament championship by hitting on their last two shots by Blake Forkey and Chad Anderson. Norwich faced elimination at 2-1 until Anderson evened the score to force a sixth round. Forkey tied the shootout at 3-3 in Round 9 after Wieland put the the Cardinals up the final time. That set the stage for Anderson's second shootout goal that followed a Plattsburgh miss on the last attempt.
Norwich had a slim 36-32 shots on goal advantage, including a 14-5 margin in the first period. But Cardinals freshman goaltender Ryan Williams kept the Cadets to just the lone goal in regulation. He ended up with a career-best 35 saves while Ryan Klingensmith had 31 for Norwich, which was on its heels in the third period and in overtime when Plattsburgh outshot the Cadets 12-8 and 4-0, respectively.
Junior forward Dan Sliasis and Williams represented Plattsburgh on the all-tournament team.
