Bearcats Top Cardinals in Cardinal Classic Championship

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - The Plattsburgh State women's basketball scored a season-high 81 points, but could not match Baruch's triple-digit numbers and fell in the 2009 Cardinal Classic Championship game, 81-110.

The loss drops the Cardinals to 1-2 for the year, while the Bearcats rise to 2-0.

During the first half, Baruch shot 63 percent from the field, topping Plattsburgh's 54 percent. The Bearcats entered the half with a 56-45 lead.

Plattsburgh faultered a bit in the second, allowing Baruch to lead by as a much at 26 points with 10:31 left in the game.

Taylor Amarando led the Cardinals with 22 points and nine rebounds, while Stephanie McCoy contributed 14 points. Ashley Gyscek came off the bench to dish out a team-high four assists, while McCoy and Catherine Cassidy each nabbed a steal during the contest.

Amarando and Lyndsey Moore were named all-tournament for the Cardinals.

Six Bearcats scored in the double-digits, led by Megan Bouwens with 23 and tournament MVP Monique Salmon with 20. Kalea Davis posted a double-double, sinking 10 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Salmon led the game with eight assists.

In the consolation round, Castleton defeated Albany College of Pharmacy 84-43. The Spartans now stand at 2-1 for the season, while ACP drops to 1-3.

Vanessa Powers came off the bend to lead the victorious Spartans with 21 points and tied Megan Johnson for a team-high nine rebounds. Jassmine Matos and Laura Cary followed her with 12 and 11 points each.

For the Panthers, Kelly VanValkenburgh posted 13 points with six rebounds. Alex Oaks led the game with four blocks.
