Al Modrzejewski, a 34-year college coaching veteran, completed his first season as an assistant men's basketball coach at Plattsburgh State in 2019-20
Plattsburgh State finished just one game back of State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament qualification in Modrzejewski's first season at Plattsburgh State, as he helped guide the Cardinals to an 8-17 overall (5-13 SUNYAC) mark.
Modrzejewski, who spent 20 years as an assistant coach at NCAA Division II Clarion University prior to arriving at Plattsburgh State, has coached at both the NCAA Division I and II levels and served as the interim head coach at Clarion from July 2014-October 2014 following the retirement of long-time head coach Ron Righter. He was a part of more than 350 wins at Clarion and was an assistant coach for a pair of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West championships and the program's lone PSAC title. Modrzejewski recruited the school and PSAC all-time leading scorer, Kwame Morton, who was the 1994 NCAA Division II National Player of the Year, as well as Oronn Brown, who set the Division II career steals mark during his playing days.
He began his Clarion coaching career in 1989-90, helped the Golden Eagles to 91 wins in six seasons before leaving to spend one season as an assistant coach at Division I St. Francis (N.Y.) College, two seasons at Division II Pitt-Johnstown and one season at Division II East Stroudsburg University. Modrzejewski returned to Clarion in August 1999 and remained on staff through the 2018-19 season.
A native of Pittsburgh, Pa., Modrzejewski was a graduate assistant in sports information at Point Park University in 1986 and served as an assistant coach at St. Mary's (Mich.) College in 1987. He returned to Point Park as an assistant coach for two years before beginning his first of two stints at Clarion.
Modrzejewski earned his bachelor's degree in communications from Alliance College in 1985.
