PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's cross country team opened the 2026 campaign with a fourth-place finish at the 44th Annual Cardinal Classic on Saturday afternoon. Graduate student Samuel Van Auken (Greenville, N.Y./Greenville) led the Cardinals with a 20th-place finish, clocking in at 16:49.7 in the first collegiate 5K race of his cross country career.

Senior Zander Brown (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) was the next Cardinal across the finish line, placing 25th in 16:57.9 and setting a new personal best. Junior Brody Serfass (Endwell, N.Y./Maine Endwell) followed in 27th at 17:02.6. Sophomore Brennan Muecke (Beamus Point, N.Y./Maple Grove) finished 42nd in 17:22.9 in the first collegiate 5K race of his cross country career, while senior Matthias Lauvau (Rye, N.Y./Rye Neck) rounded out the scoring group in 48th at 17:38.2, also recording a new personal best.

Sophomore Bryton Mandigo (Hartford, N.Y./Hartford) was close behind in 49th at 17:38.8, notching a new personal best. First-year Myles Hoffman (Medway, Mass./Medway) made his collegiate debut, finishing 53rd in 17:49.0. At the same time, sophomore transfer Sean Rose (Peru, N.Y./Peru Central) competed in his first race with the Cardinals, placing 57th in 17:57.3.

Other runners of note included first-years Matt Rombold (Endwell, N.Y./Maine Endwell) and Everett Probeck (Glenmont, N.Y./Bethlehem Central), who made their collegiate debuts. Rombold placed 61st in 18:07.1, and Probeck finished 76th in 19:07.9.

The Cardinals will be back in action in two weeks, traveling to St. Lawrence on Saturday, Sept. 19.
