PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's soccer team returned home Tuesday evening following a scoreless draw against RPI, hosting Skidmore under the lights in another matchup against a Liberty League opponent. The Cardinals battled throughout the contest but ultimately fell to the Thoroughbreds, 3-1.
The matchup marked another challenging test for Plattsburgh, which entered the contest looking to snap a three-game losing streak against Skidmore.
Skidmore opened the scoring in the 15th minute when Olivia Chandler found the back of the net off an assist from Alina Alcantara to give the Thoroughbreds an early 1-0 advantage.
The Thoroughbreds doubled their lead in the 29th minute when Mara Grace scored to send Skidmore into halftime with a 2-0 advantage.
Plattsburgh came out of the halftime break with increased pressure and began to generate more opportunities in the attacking third. The Cardinals cut the deficit in the 65th minute when senior Lilley Keyser (Keeseville, N.Y.) scored her second goal of the season to bring Plattsburgh within one at 2-1.
The Cardinals continued to push for an equalizer, recording eight shots in the second half compared to four for Skidmore. Plattsburgh also earned three second-half corner kicks as it looked to level the contest.
Skidmore, however, added an insurance goal in the 75th minute when Avery Bush found the back of the net, extending the Thoroughbreds' lead to 3-1.
Plattsburgh finished the night with 10 shots, including five on goal, while Skidmore recorded 12 shots with seven on target. The Cardinals held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks, and both teams recorded four saves.
With the result, the Cardinals move to 3-2-3 on the season. Plattsburgh State will return to action next Wednesday, when it opens SUNYAC play at home against Potsdam.
