Cardinals Sweep Purchase to Stay Unbeaten at 5-0

Purchase, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State baseball team continued its strong start to the 2026 season Sunday, sweeping a doubleheader at Purchase College to remain unbeaten at 5‑0. The two programs have faced each other just three times previously, with the last meeting coming in 2019.

The Cardinals struck first in the top of the first inning when junior Michael Piccirillo (Glen Cove, N.Y./Glen Cove) launched a solo home run to left field, giving Plattsburgh an early 1‑0 lead. Purchase evened the score in the bottom of the third on a single by Frank Rega, which drove in Cameron Cruz for a 1‑1 tie.

Plattsburgh regained the lead in the fourth inning as junior Austin Caldwell (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) delivered an RBI single, scoring senior Colin Ross (Mastic Beach, N.Y./William Floyd) to make it 2‑1. The Cardinals added an insurance run in the top of the seventh when Ross came through with a run-producing single, bringing home Piccirillo for the 3‑1 final.

On the mound, senior Isaiah Maines (Hudson, N.Y./Hudson) earned the win, allowing one run on five hits over six innings with five strikeouts. Sophomore Liam Suozzo (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) closed the game with a scoreless seventh to earn the save.

Plattsburgh carried its momentum into game two, posting a 6‑0 shutout behind strong pitching and timely hitting. The Cardinals opened the scoring in the third inning when sophomore Marc Cancelliere (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) reached on a throwing error, allowing first-year David Wallace (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) to score.

In the fourth, senior Colin Ross (Mastic Beach, N.Y./William Floyd) launched a two-run homer to right field, driving in junior Jonathan Beale (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's Boys) and giving Plattsburgh a 3‑0 advantage. Beale's sacrifice fly in the fifth scored senior Bostyn Duquette (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh), extending the lead to 4‑0. The Cardinals added two more in the sixth when junior Tyler Martin (New Windsor, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) plated Austin Caldwell, and Wallace followed with an RBI single, scoring senior Ryan Hart (Portland, Ore./Jesuit) for the 6‑0 final.

Junior Kyan Zamaniyan (Kings Park, N.Y./Smithtown West) earned the win, tossing five scoreless innings and allowing only two hits while striking out four. First-years Max Palermo (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) and Kyle Sperring (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) combined to close out the shutout.

With the doubleheader sweep, the Cardinals remain unbeaten on the season at 5‑0. Plattsburgh will return to action on Friday, March 13, for a road contest at New Jersey City University, with first pitch scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
