CORTLAND, N.Y. - The Plattsburgh State Cardinals baseball team opened conference play on the road Saturday, falling in both ends of a doubleheader to the Cortland Red Dragons.
In game one, Cortland used a big first inning to take control early. The Red Dragons drew multiple walks and strung together timely hits to score five runs in the opening frame and grab a 5–0 lead.
Plattsburgh responded in the second inning when Tyler Martin (New Windsor, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) delivered an RBI double to cut the deficit to 5–1. However, the Cardinals were unable to sustain offensive momentum as Cortland continued to build its lead. The Red Dragons added two runs in the fifth inning before breaking the game open in the sixth with a two-run home run and an RBI single. Cortland tacked on another run in the seventh to secure a 11–1 victory.
In game two, Plattsburgh jumped out to an early advantage, erupting for five runs in the top of the first inning. The Cardinals capitalized on early opportunities, scoring twice on wild pitches before Tyler Martin drove in a run with a single. Ian Warren (Esopus, N.Y./Highland) followed with a two-run single to give Plattsburgh a 5–0 lead.
Cortland answered in the third inning with a game-changing swing, launching a grand slam to pull within one before tying the game later in the inning. The Red Dragons took the lead for good in the fourth, using a sacrifice fly and a passed ball to go ahead 7–5.
The Red Dragons continued to add on in the sixth inning with a combination of RBI hits and a sacrifice fly, extending the lead to 11–5. Cortland then put the game out of reach in the seventh with a three-run frame, highlighted by a home run and a two-run double.
Plattsburgh showed resilience in the ninth inning, scoring three runs on bases-loaded walks and a passed ball, but the comeback fell short as Cortland earned a 14–8 win.
With the losses, the Cardinals fall to 9–4 on the season and will be back in action tomorrow morning at 9:30 a.m. to wrap up their three-game series against Cortland.
