PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – With its 53-48 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) win over Oneonta on Saturday evening, the Plattsburgh State women's basketball team clinched the fourth seed in the conference tournament.
Before the game, Plattsburgh honored its three seniors,
Kathy Peterson-Ross (Lake Forest, Ill. / Lake Forest),
Imani Walcott (Albany, N.Y. / Albany), and
Jaden Wilson (Johnstown, N.Y. / Johnstown).
Sophomore forward
Desiree DuBois (Champlain, N.Y. / Northeastern Clinton Central) led the way offensively with 15 points and added six rebounds. Walcott recorded nine points and grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds, just missing out on the double-double. Wilson finished with nine points and five rebounds, while sophomore guard
Kayla Johannesen (Hyde Park, N.Y. / Our Lady of Lourdes) pulled down nine rebounds and chipped in seven points.
For the Red Dragons, Lidia Boucher led the way with 13 points to go with six rebounds and a game-high five steals. Kayla Beaudoin finished with 11 points and five rebounds, and Carlie Young contributed eight points, seven rebounds, and four assists.
Plattsburgh shot a solid 28.3% overall and 32.0% from three-point range, compared to Oneonta's 27.0% from the field and 18.8% from beyond the arc. The Cardinals held a slight 50-49 edge in rebounding, but the Red Dragons had the advantage in second-chance points, 7-5. Oneonta also controlled points off turnovers, 9-2.
Offense was hard to come by in the first quarter as Oneonta held a 5-4 lead after 10 minutes of action.
The second quarter picked up as both teams traded baskets until a 9-0 spurt, led by DuBois, gave Plattsburgh a 16-9 lead with 1:52 to go. Oneonta answered with back-to-back baskets, but Greek knocked down a triple as Plattsburgh took a 19-15 lead into halftime.
Oneonta opened the third quarter with a 10-0 run as the Red Dragons took a 25-19 lead with 6:35 remaining. Wilson ended the run with a triple, but Plattsburgh still trailed 38-35 after DuBois scored on back-to-back baskets to close the third quarter.
After Oneonta netted back-to-back baskets, the Cardinals answered with two triples from DuBois and Johannesen that made the score 42-41 Red Dragons at the 7:38 mark. Later, Plattsburgh used a 9-0 surge, sparked by Wilson, to pull ahead 50-43 and secure the lead for good with under a minute remaining. Oneonta trimmed the deficit to three, but two free throws from Greek sealed the game as Plattsburgh held on for a 53-48 victory.
With the win, Plattsburgh State closes the regular season 15-10 (10-8 SUNYAC) as it turns its focus to postseason play. The Cardinals secured the No. 4 seed in the conference tournament and will host No. 5 seed Oswego State on Tuesday, Feb. 24, with a 7 p.m. tip-off.
