PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's basketball team fell to Oswego State 84-60 in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action at home on Friday night. Sophomore guard
Jaiden Gladney (Charlestown, W. Va. / Jefferson) paced the Cardinals with 14 points to go with two assists and two steals.
Senior guard
Reem Welch (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Thomas Jefferson) had 12 points, a game-high nine assists, and six rebounds, while sophomore forward
Colin Hartig (Hohen Neuendorf, Germany / Neues Gymnasium Glienicke) recorded a career-high 10 points and grabbed four rebounds.
Mari Johnson (Binghamton, N.Y. / Johnson City) led all players with 12 rebounds and added eight points and a team-high three steals.
For the Lakers, Jayson McGhee led all players in points with 21 to go with five rebounds, three steals, and two blocks. Deacon Judd finished with 12 points and nine rebounds, and Freddy Fowler and Steven Bradley both netted 11 points.
Plattsburgh State shot a solid 38.3% from the floor but managed just 17.2% from beyond the arc, compared to Oswego State's 46.9% from the field and 28.1% from three-point range. The Lakers controlled the boards 39-32 and also had the edge in second-chance points, 12-4. The Cardinals capitalized on mistakes with 13 points off turnovers, while the Lakers had 12.
The Cardinals trailed early in the first half, as two free throws from Hartig brought Plattsburgh within 8-7, but a 9-0 run pushed the Lakers ahead 17-7 with 12:48 remaining. Plattsburgh couldn't build any momentum, as another big run extended the Lakers' lead to 33-14 with 6:21 to go in the first half. Late in the half, a layup from Johnson was followed by a layup from
David McKnight Jr. (South Orange, N.J. / Columbia), as Plattsburgh trailed 47-26 at the break.
Plattsburgh had a better second half as an early 7-0 burst gave them some momentum and made the score 54-37 at the 15:17 mark. From there, the Cardinals were unable to sustain any runs, as Welch hit two layups to bring the score to 73-50 with 4:17 remaining. Plattsburgh kept battling as Gladney drained two late three-pointers, and the Cardinals ultimately fell 84-60.
With the loss, Plattsburgh State drops to 9-8 (6-5 SUNYAC) and will be back in action tomorrow, Jan. 31, when the team hosts Canton for a 4 p.m. tip-off.
