NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Led by sophomore
Anabella Almeida (Pine Bush, N.Y. / Pine Bush) with 15 assists and four digs, the Plattsburgh State women's volleyball team swept Norwich 3-0 (25-16, 25-14, 25-8) in non-conference action.
Junior
Iris Mulvey (Middle Island, N.Y. / Longwood) was the beneficiary of Almeida's assists with a game-high eight kills to go with six digs and five service aces for 13.5 points on the night. Next in kills was senior
Kyleigh Ganz (Phoenix, Ariz. / Seton Catholic Prep) with seven, while first-year
Emily O'Brien (Monroe, N.Y. / Monroe-Woodbury) recorded 13 assists. Defensively, on the back row, senior
Bridget Ryan (Mattituck, N.Y. / Mattituck) led the way with a game-high 19 digs, and up top, senior
Melina Morillo (Bronx, N.Y. / Bronx Latin) and Mulvey had a block assist each.
For the Cadets, Bella Ray Belldina led the team in kills with six, set up by eight assists from Autumn Parkhurst, while Cameryn Jenkins led the defense with seven digs.
The Cardinals led in almost every category, holding a 48-36 advantage in digs, a 16-5 advantage in aces, while the Cadets had the upper hand in blocks 2-1.
Plattsburgh State gets back in the win column, improving to 4-8 overall, and will next host Paul Smith's and Vermont State University (VTSU) Johnson on Saturday, Sept. 27, at 12 and 4 p.m., respectively. Norwich drops to 1-10 overall with the loss and returns to conference play when they travel to Regis College on Saturday, Sept. 27.
After back-and-forth play, the Cardinals went on a 7-0 run, fueled by two kills from
Darby Collyear (Rockwall, Texas / Rockwall), and took an 11-7 lead. The Cadets got back into the match and tied it at 12 and again at 13, but a 9-0 tear that saw two kills from
Liya Girma (Sachse, Texas / Bishop Lynch) put the match out of reach as the Cardinals took set one 25-16.
The momentum continued into the second set when the Cardinals responded with an 8-0 surge, featuring kills from Mulvey, Ganz, and
Sanaia Estime (West Hempstead, N.Y. / West Hempstead), and took a 12-7 lead after trailing early in the match. The Cardinals led the rest of the way, ending the second set with four straight points for a 25-14 set win.
Plattsburgh dominated the third and final set, ripping off a 12-0 tear, highlighted by two kills each from Ganz and Mulvey to take a commanding 15-2 lead. The Cardinals' offense showed no signs of slowing down as a 4-0 burst with two service aces from O'Brien put the game out of reach, and Plattsburgh went on to win 25-8.
