PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State baseball team fell 10-1 to Vermont State University Castleton on Wednesday afternoon, dropping the non-conference contest at Chip Cummings Field. A seven-run seventh put the game out of reach for the Cards, who scored their lone run of the game in the bottom of the ninth.
Justice Suafoa (Kinderhook, N.Y./Ichabod Crane) drove in Plattsburgh's run in the ninth, scoring
Kyle Cremin (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic), who had a base hit to lead off the inning. On the mound, Jack Castilo (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) started the game and gave Plattsburgh two scoreless innings.
Logan Avin (Honolulu, Hawaii/Waterford (Conn.)) finished the game for the Cardinals, striking out four over 2.1 scoreless innings of work.
For Castleton, starter Luke Russell tossed a complete game, allowing just one run over his nine innings while striking out two. Tyler Dubreuil was 3-5 with two runs scored, an RBI, a walk, and a stolen base, while Jack Boyle was 2-4 with two runs scored and two RBI, walking once, and being hit by a pitch. Jackson Cardozo had an RBI double, going 2-5 with two runs scored.
Plattsburgh falls to 6-10 and now prepares for a conference series against defending league champs New Paltz. They will host the Hawks for a doubleheader on Friday, April 11, at 12 p.m. and will play a single game on Saturday, April 12, at noon. The Spartans move to 8-14 and next play VTSU-Lyndon on Thursday, April 10, at 1 p.m.
After two scoreless frames to start the game, Castleton tagged Plattsburgh reliever
Liam Suozzo (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) for a run on a sacrifice fly by Sammy Steinman.
In the fifth, the Spartans added two more runs as Cardozo doubled home Boyle and then came around to score on a botched throw to third as he tagged up to reach third.
In the seventh, seven runs scored for Castleton on four hits and two costly errors, giving the Spartans a 10-0 lead.
On the other end, Russell was cruising, as he was under 60 pitches through six innings of work. The Cards finally got a rally going in the eighth, as
Adam Wein (North Rockland, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep) had a two-out singled followed by a walk, but Plattsburgh was unable to capitalize.
After a 1-2-3 top of the ninth, Cremin led off the bottom of the ninth with a single, but two quick outs followed.
Aidan Diltz (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) kept the game going with a single up the middle in the next at-bat and Suafoa followed with a two-strike single to right, giving the Cards their first run of the day. The next batter ground out to third, ending the game and giving Russell and Castleton the win.
