Baseball Falls in SUNYAC Series Finale to New Paltz

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State baseball team fell in its final State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game of the season against New Paltz, 14 -2. The Hawks scored early and often, grabbing an early lead and adding throughout the game, forcing the run-rule in seven innings.

Colin Ross (Mastic Beach, N.Y./William Floyd) led the Cardinal offensive attack as he hit his second homer of the season in the third inning and also scored both Plattsburgh runs. Michael Piccirillo (Glen Cove, N.Y./Glen Cove) had his second straight multi-hit outing, going 2-3 with a walk to reach safely three times. Hunter Eberhart (East Hampton, N.Y./East Hampton) tossed a scoreless inning for the Cardinals in relief.

Wallace Kirkpatrick was 3-5 with three RBI for New Paltz, while Anthony Pericolosi was 2-5 with two runs scored and a two-run homer. Michael Ascanio finished his strong weekend going 2-4 with two RBIs, while Fabain Apicella and Garrett Grathwohl each went 2-4 with two RBIs as well. Ryan Kniermen earned the win with four innings of relief, allowing one unearned run, while Xavier Zykoff started the game and gave up one earned run in three innings of work.

Plattsburgh State falls to 6-13 (0-6 SUNYAC) and will look for their first conference win on Monday, April 14, when they travel to Canton for a SUNYAC doubleheader. New Paltz moves go 20-8 (9-2 SUNYAC) with the three-game sweep and next takes on Ramapo College in non-conference action on the road on April 15.

The Hawks wasted little time getting on the board, scoring two runs in the first and adding on four in the second with six hits in both innings. The scoring was highlighted by Pericolosi's two-run blast that gave the Hawks a 4-0 lead, and then Kirkpatrick made it 6-0 with a two-run single.

Ross got the Cardinals on the board with a towering solo blast to left in the third, his second homer of the season, putting his team down 6-1.

New Paltz responded with three runs on three hits in the fourth and greeted Bostyn Duquette (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh), who relieved Isaiah Maines (Hudson, N.Y./Hudson) with a four-run inning in the fifth, as they took a 13-1 lead.

An error in the bottom of the fifth inning gave the Cardinals another run, as back-to-back two out walks to Ross and Piccirillo led to Ross scoring on a dropped pop up on the infield to make the score 13-2.

New Paltz immediately got the run back, going up 14-2 in the top of the sixth where the score would hold over the final innings, as the Hawks completed the three-game sweep with a seven-inning victory in Plattsburgh.
