The battle on the circle was deadlocked as both teams tallied 15 draw controls, but Clarkson dominated the shot battle 38-10 and had 34 shots on goal while Plattsburgh had eight.  The Golden Knights controlled the game on the ground, recording 18 ground balls compared to the Cardinals' eight. On clears, Plattsburgh was 5-10 while Clarkson was 15-15. The Cardinals were 0-1 on free-position shots while the Golden Knights were 1-3.

Less than a minute into the opening quarter, the Cardinals struck after a cutting Garcia received a pass from Barnoksy from goal line extended and was able to get the one-timer past the goalie. However, a minute later Barnum started a four-goal run for the Golden Knights as Clarkson took a 4-1 lead with over 10 minutes remaining in the quarter. Barnosky created another scoring opportunity this time finding Dickinson cutting around the crease for the score right on the doorstep. Another scoring burst pushed Clarkson's lead to 9-2 before Klotz scored the final goal of the quarter and made the score 9-3 after one.

The second quarter was all Clarkson, outscoring Plattsburgh 7-1 as O'Hara tallied the only goal for Plattsburgh near the end of the quarter, ending a six-goal run for Clarkson. The Golden Knights tacked on a late goal from Maeve Bartell off the assist from Ava Goyette, extending the Golden Knights' lead to 16-4 at halftime.
