CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey team dropped a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) matchup on Saturday night, falling to No. 14 Cortland 6-2 in Alumni Arena. After trailing 1-0 after one period, Cortland scored three unanswered goals to build a four-goal cushion they would hold the rest of the way.
The Cortland Red Dragons are currently the No. 14 team in the USCHO.com Division III Top-15 poll.
First-years
Tyler Ramm (Westborough, Mass./Northeast Generals) and
Patrick Cole (Lancaster, N.Y./Buffalo Jr. Sabres) tallied goals for Plattsburgh State in the loss.
Jacob Hearne (Ennismore, Ontario/Toronto Jr. Candiens) was the goalie of record for Plattsburgh, making 19 saves in just over 40 minutes of action, while
Dominik Bovan (Bratislava, Slovakia/Boston Jr. Bruins) made 11 saves in just under 20 minutes of action.
The Red Dragons outshot Plattsburgh State over 20 minutes, putting 36 shots to the Cardinals' 21. The Cards finished the night 0-3 on the advantage while Cortland was 1-3.
Plattsburgh State falls to 11-10-1 (5-6 SUNYAC) and next hosts Buffalo State on Friday, Feb. 14 at 7 p.m. in the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena. Cortland improves to 16-6-0 (9-2-0 SUNYAC) and next host Oswego State for a pivotal conference matchup on Friday, Feb. 14.
The first period saw the Cortland offense find an early rhythm, putting 14 shots on goal with more opportunities left on the table. They picked up the lead early on, as Domenic Settimo scored just before the third minute of play ended, as the team held the 1-0 advantage the rest of the way.
In the second period, the Red Dragon offense exploded for three goals, with two coming before the five-and-a-half-minute mark of play, and another coming at the 16:00 minute mark. The third goal of the period came after the Cards were unable to score on a five-minute power play in a big, missed opportunity. Ramm did give his team a little bit of a boost with his one-time goal, as
Shane Bondy (Sharon, Ontario/Markham Royals) and
Jake Lanyi (North Salem, N.Y./Connecticut Jr. Rangers) tallied assists.
In the third period, Cortland added tho their lead just over two minutes in, prompting the change to Bovan. Bovan stood tall over his time in net, as the Red Dragons put several shots on net, and he allowed just on goal at the 5:24 mark.
Trailing 6-1, Cole added the Cardinals second and final on an impressive run from the defensive zone, through the neutral zone and then into the slot, where he ripped a slapshot through the top shelf over the goalies left shoulder for the score.
Jagger Benson (Lynnfield, Mass./Cranbrook Bucks) and
Lonan Bulger (Yellowknife, Northwest Territories/Hobart) each added assists.
Ronan Mobley made 19 saves in net, earning the win for the Red Dragons.
