No. 8 Women's Ice Hockey Wins 4-0 Over Canton on Senior Day

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. The No. 8 Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey team secured their second straight shutout win on Senior Day, taking down SUNY Canton 4-0 in the team's final regular season State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game. All four goals were scored by seniors, with Bridget Orr (Excelsior, Minn./North American Hockey Academy) leading the way with two goals and two assists.

Plattsburgh State is currently the No. 8 team in the USCHO.com Division III Top-15 Poll.

The Cardinals celebrated four seniors before the action as Mattie Norton (Glen Carbon, Ill./St. Louis Lady Blues), Mae Olshansky (Las Vegas, Nev./North American Hockey Academy), Orr, and Ciara Wall (Somerville, Mass./New Hampshire) were honored with a pregame ceremony, The group carried the offensive load, combining for four goals and three assists, with both Norton and Olshansky notching a goal and assist. Molly Riggi (Farmingdale, N.J./New Jersey Titans) and Seoyoung Yoo (Yongin, Republic of Korea/Ontario Hockey Academy) each tallied two assists. Chloe Lewis picked up her third shutout in the team's five-game win streak, making 18 saves in just under 60 minutes of play.

Plattsburgh State outshot the 'Roos 31-18, going 1-4 on the power play while Canton was 0-4.

The Cards improve to 18-5-1 (14-3-1 SUNYAC) with the win and close out their regular season with a game at Williams on Tuesday, Feb. 18. The team will be closely watching the games of Cortland Oswego State, as seeding between the top three SUNYAC teams could still see some movement down the stretch. Canton falls to 6-15-2 (4-11-1 SUNYAC) and next travels to Morrisville for a pivotal SUNYAC matchup to determine the fourth seed in the conference playoffs.

The first period was all Plattsburgh State, as the Cardinals wasted little time taking the lead. Norton gave her team the early advantage by rebounding a Kayson Ruegge (Edmond, Okla./Philadelphia Jr. Flyers) saved shot, putting a close-range shot through the top shelf at 3:36 in the first period.

Just over two minutes later, Orr added to the Cardinal lead as she rebounded an Olshansky shot on the doorstep, shoveling a shot into the back of the net as she was knocked over. The goal gave the Cardinals the 2-0 lead just 5:41 into the game and the team was able to cruise the rest of the way.

Orr added her second score of the action at the 4:33 mark of the second period, as Riggi led the Cardinal offense down the ice and into the offensive zone. The junior forward made a centering pass from the right face-off circle to Orr who was heading straight down the slot, and the senior went right through the five-hole for her second goal of the game.

Olshansky finished off the scoring on Plattsburgh's final power play of the day, scoring with just over four minutes remaining in regulation. A pass from Norton at the point found Olshansky who was sitting unmarked on the doorstep of the Canton netminder, setting up an easy finish for the graduate student forward who picked up her seventh goal of the season and third power play goal.

Molly Lenihan made 27 saves in goal for Canton, taking the loss in net.
