Ramm Scores Twice as Men's Ice Hockey Clinches SUNYAC Playoff Berth with 4-3 Win Over Fredonia on Senior Day

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. Tyler Ramm (Westborough, Mass./Northeast Generals) scored two goals, including the game-winner, as Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey secured a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) win on Senior Day. The win secured the Cardinals a spot in the SUNYAC playoffs, as they currently stand as the fourth seed with each team having just one more conference game to play.

Plattsburgh State honored their six graduating seniors on Saturday after the game, as Jagger Benson (Lynnfield, Mass./Cranbrook Bucks), Jacob Hearne (Ennismore, Ontario/Toronto Jr. Canadiens), Jake Lanyi (North Salem, N.Y./Connecticut Jr. Rangers), Ryan Poorman (Phoenixville, Pa./Norwich), Jack Ring (Hingham, Mass./Northeast Generals), and Eli Shiller (Toronto, Ontario/Wellington Dukes) were celebrated for their careers with the Cards.

Ramm notched the game-winner in the third period, after scoring a game-tying goal in the waning moments of the second period. Kevin Weaver-Vitale (Toronto, Ontario/Markham Royals) had the first goal of the night for Plattsburgh, while Blake Hall (Fort Erie, Ontario/Fort Erie Meteors) had the game-tying goal in the third period, the first score of his career. Jake Sacratini (Montreal, Quebec/AIC) tallied two assists, and Hearne matched his season-high with 35 saves to earn the win in net.

The Cardinals outshot the Blue Devils 41-38 on the evening, going 1-2 on the advantage while Fredonia was 1-4 on the power play.

Plattsburgh State moves to 13-10-1 (7-6 SUNYAC) and next takes on Potsdam on Friday, Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. for a chance to clinch the fourth seed in the SUNYAC playoffs. Fredonia falls to 7-17 (5-8 SUNYAC) and is eliminated from playoff contention, as they next take on Buffalo State on Friday, Feb. 21.

In an offensive show that saw a flurry of shots throughout the night, Sam Chrenka opened the scoring with a goal for the Blue Devils 9:17 into the game action. The lead would hold for Fredonia for over three minutes until the Cardinals went on the power play, and Weaver-Vitale connected on a deep shot from the point, tying the game with 12:33 elapsed in the first period. Sacratini notched the primary assist on the play with Vlad Pshenichnikov (Moscow, Russia/Utica) earning the secondary assist.

The 1-1 tie held through the final portion of the first period and over halfway into the second stanza before Gavin Bloder gave Fredonia back the lead 11:14 into the period. The Blue Devil lead looked like it would hold into the final intermission before Ramm scored with just under 40 seconds left in the stanza to tie the game at two goals apiece. Sacratini broke up a pass from below the goal line, subsequently finding Lanyi skating down the slot undefended. The senior let a one-timer go from just inside the point, which was saved, but the rebound came right to Ramm on the left side of the net where he was able to finish on an undefended net with the goalie out of position.

In the third period, Bloder gave his team the lead back with a power play goal after 4:55 had gone by, giving him his second goal of the game.

The Cardinals eventually took back the lead in a dramatic sequence that began with Hall's first career goal. The first-year out of Fort Erie, Ontario deflected a Ring shot into the back of the net, tying the game and giving the momentum and the crowd back to the home team. Simon Singher (Beloeil, Quebec/Navan Grads) picked up his first points of the season on the play with the secondary assist.

23 seconds later in game-time, Ramm intercepted an errant Blue Devil pass in the Cards' offensive zone, leading him to a two-on-one. He initially looked like he was going to pass off to Sacratini to his right, but momentarily lost control of the puck, leaving him with the only option of shooting the puck. The first-year did just that, burying a shot past the Fredonia goaltender stick-side, giving the Cards the 4-3 lead with 9:04 to go in the game's action.

Down the stretch, the Cardinal defense and Hearne stood tall as the Blue Devils had a 6-on-5 advantage for over two minutes but could not put one in the back of the net. Plattsburgh nearly had a couple of empty net goals, but settled for the 4-3 win instead, clinching a SUNYAC playoff spot after starting the weekend on the outside of the playoff picture.

Jameson Kaine made 37 saves in net for the Blue Devils, picking up the loss.
