Men’s Basketball Dominates Buffalo State 83-58, Securing Second Straight SUNYAC Win

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's basketball team dominated Buffalo State 83-58, securing its second straight State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) win on Saturday evening at Memorial Hall. Senior guard Reem Welch (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Thomas Jefferson) led the way for the Cardinals with a game-high 24 points, a game-high 12 rebounds, and a game-high four assists.

David McKnight Jr. (South Orange, N.J. / Columbia) and Khalil Screen (Providence, R.I. / Classical) both poured in 11 points, while McKnight Jr. added two rebounds, an assist, and a steal, and Screen three rebounds and two assists. Elijah Morris (Mount Vernon, N.Y. / Mount Vernon) had a solid outing as well with 10 points, seven rebounds, and three steals. Jaiden Gladney (Charlestown, W. Va. / Jefferson) finished with eight points, five rebounds, an assist, and a steal.

For the Bengals, Remi Skvorc and Willmer Beard led the way with 11 points each, adding three and two rebounds, respectively. Daquan Williams contributed nine points and six rebounds in the overall effort.

Overall, for the game, Plattsburgh State shot a strong 46.5% from the floor and were solid from behind the arc, shooting 26.1%. Buffalo State shot a solid 32.8% from the field and 23.1% from the three-point line on the night. The Cardinals had the edge on the glass (43-39) and added 15 second-chance points to the Bengals' seven. The Cardinals won the turnover battle and finished with 17 points off turnovers compared to the Bengals' seven.

The game began with back-and-forth play as four straight free throws from Welch gave Plattsburgh a 10-8 lead before the Bengals tied the score at 10 with 15:15 to go. The Bengals took a momentary 15-14 lead, but Plattsburgh responded quickly with five straight points to make the score 19-15 Cardinals at the 11:17 mark. After the Bengals cut the deficit to one, the Cardinals used a 7-0 surge led by Screen with three points and took a 28-20 lead. The Cardinals pushed their lead to as high as 10, but a Bengals layup to end the half made the score 37-29 going into the break.

Plattsburgh got the scoring started early in the second half, using a quick 6-0 burst to push their lead to 43-29 with 17:08 to go. The Cardinals' offense showed no sign of slowing down as an 11-0 tear that saw three-pointers from Welch and McKnight Jr. made the score 59-33 with 11:25 remaining. A layup from Screen at the 6:40 mark made the score 73-40 and gave Plattsburgh its largest lead of the game as the Cardinals cruised to an 83-58 win.

With the win, Plattsburgh State rises to 4-3 (2-0 SUNYAC) and will be back in action in the new year, when the team hosts Clarkson on Friday, Jan. 2, for a 4 p.m. tip-off. Buffalo State drops to 4-4 (0-2 SUNYAC) and next hosts Hilbert College on Wednesday, Dec. 10.
