Women’s Basketball Drops First Game of the Season to St. Lawrence

CANTON, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's basketball team fell to St. Lawrence 74-36 in non-conference action on Tuesday night at Ronald T. Burkman Gymnasium.

Sophomore forward Desiree DuBois (Champlain, N.Y. / Northeastern Clinton Central) led the Plattsburgh offense with 10 points to go with five rebounds and a block. Julia Greek (Long Island, N.Y. / Ward Melville) and Imani Walcott (Albany, N.Y. / Albany) both contributed seven points, while Greek dished out two assists and Walcott grabbed three rebounds.

For the Saints, Norah Niesz and Jackie Malley led the way with 11 points each. Izzy Caron recorded a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, while Stevie Bannon added 10 points as well.

Overall, for the game, the Cardinals shot just 24.1% from the floor and connected on only one three-pointer. In contrast, the Saints posted a solid 39.2% from the field and 36.4% from the three-point line, hitting eight triples. The Cardinals lost the rebounding battle 47-24 and only had seven second-chance points compared to the Saints' 25. The Saints also had more points off turnovers with 17, whereas Plattsburgh only had five.

St. Lawrence jumped out to a 14-3 lead before DuBois ended the run, and a three-pointer from Greek with 2:07 remaining ended another Saints' run, but the Cardinals still trailed 22-8 at the end of the first quarter.

The Cardinals used a quick 4-0 burst, featuring two points each from Selma Deisz (Bekkestua, Norway / Nadderud VGS) and DuBois, to make the score 34-14 at the 5:12 mark. The Saints countered with seven straight points, extending their lead to 41-14 before Plattsburgh responded with back-to-back baskets and went into halftime down 41-18.

Walcott got things rolling in the third quarter, but the Cardinals couldn't muster any momentum and went without a basket until a 6-0 surge led by DuBois made the score 51-26 with 2:53 to go. Walcott netted a layup late in the quarter, but St. Lawrence responded with five points to take a 62-28 lead into the fourth quarter.

A layup from Jaden Wilson (Johnstown, N.Y. / Johnstown) opened the scoring for Plattsburgh, and then a free throw from Calleigh Franklin (East Hartland, Conn. / Northwestern Regional) sparked a 6-0 run that made the score 66-36 before the Cardinals ultimately fell 74-36.

With the loss, Plattsburgh State falls to 3-1 and is back in action in the Morin Memorial Tournament with a matchup against Keene State on Friday, Nov. 21, at 8 p.m. St. Lawrence moves to 3-0 and next plays Connecticut College in the Western New England Tournament on Friday, Nov. 21.
