BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's soccer team wrapped up its regular season in winning fashion, defeating Buffalo State, 1-0, on the road Saturday afternoon to clinch the No. 2 seed in the SUNYAC Tournament and a first-round bye.
The Cardinals entered the contest unbeaten in their last five matches, most recently earning a 1-0 road victory over Potsdam on Wednesday. Despite having already secured a postseason berth, Plattsburgh State looked to lock up the No. 2 seed and did just that with another strong defensive performance.
The opening 45 minutes proved to be an even, back-and-forth affair with limited quality scoring chances for either side. The Cardinals managed just two shots in the first half, while Buffalo State registered six attempts, though none found the back of the net, as the teams entered halftime deadlocked at 0-0.
Plattsburgh State came out with renewed energy in the second half, pushing the tempo and applying consistent pressure in search of the breakthrough. That pressure paid off early in the period when junior Sydney Myers (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Saranac) slipped a perfectly timed through ball behind the defense to senior Sally Gliganic (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville), who calmly finished into the back of the net to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead. The goal marked Gliganic's second career tally, while Myers collected her fifth assist of the season, having now been involved in 15 of Plattsburgh's 26 goals on the year.
The Cardinals' young but composed back line continued to shine, limiting Buffalo State's opportunities down the stretch to secure the team's eighth shutout of the season. Sophomore goalkeeper Desiree DuBois (Champlain, N.Y./Northeastern Clinton Central) made five saves in the clean sheet.
With the win, Plattsburgh State improves to 9-6-2 overall and 6-1-2 in SUNYAC play. The Cardinals will now await the winner of Fredonia vs. Oswego in the SUNYAC semifinals on November 5th.
