PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's soccer team turned in a commanding performance on Wednesday afternoon, rolling to a 6-0 victory over SUNY Potsdam at the Field House Complex to clinch a spot in the SUNYAC playoffs.
The Cardinals, who have not lost to the Bears since 2014, continued their dominance in the rivalry by controlling possession from the opening whistle and dictating the pace throughout. Plattsburgh outshot Potsdam by an overwhelming 25-3 margin, creating scoring chances at will while limiting the Bears to minimal opportunities.
Plattsburgh wasted no time getting on the board as first-year Rocco Ruscitto ripped a shot from distance into the net in the 5th minute, assisted by junior Tristan Laundree. First-year Declan Gallagher doubled the lead in the 21st minute, heading home a corner kick from junior Cris Arias, who went on to orchestrate the Cardinals' offensive outburst.
Arias delivered pinpoint crosses on Plattsburgh's next two goals, setting up seniors Randall Ashong and Justin Siegel for their first goals as Cardinals to make it 4-0. Arias added his fourth assist of the match shortly after, finding Ryan Shalvey, who buried his first goal of the season to give Plattsburgh a 5-0 halftime advantage.
The Cardinals remained in control after the break, continuing to press while maintaining their defensive composure. In the 78th minute, sophomore Alex Guevara converted a penalty kick drawn by Gabriel Moscheni, capping off the 6-0 victory.
With the win, Plattsburgh improves to 10-2-4 overall and 5-2-1 in SUNYAC play, while officially clinching a berth in the SUNYAC Tournament. The Cardinals will close out their regular season on Saturday, Oct. 25, when they host Buffalo State at 1 p.m.
