wPLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's volleyball team bounced back with a 3-1 (25-20, 15-25, 25-23, 25-17) victory over Colby-Sawyer, thanks to a balanced attack set up by sophomore setter
Anabella Almeida (Pine Bush, N.Y. / Pine Bush) and first-year setter
Emily O'Brien (Monroe, N.Y. – Monroe-Woodbury). Almeida finished the night with 22 assists and five digs, while O'Brien tallied 18 assists and nine digs, just missing out on the double-double.
Junior outside hitters
Liya Girma (Sachse, Texas / Bishop Lynch) and
Iris Mulvey (Middle Island, N.Y. / Longwood) were the beneficiaries of those assists, recording 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Senior middle blocker
Sanaia Estime (West Hempstead, N.Y. / West Hempstead) totaled a career-high 11 points off six kills, three service aces, and three total blocks. On the defensive end, senior libero
Bridget Ryan (Mattituck, N.Y. / Mattituck) tied her career-high in digs with 28, while senior middle blocker
Katie Salphine (Le Roy, N.Y. / Le Roy) led all players with four total blocks, and junior
Darby Collyear (Rockwall, N.Y. / Rockwall) had three total.
For the Chargers, Kamryn Brakemeier led her team with a game-high 15 kills, Bree Bacon led her team in assists with a game-high 35, and Madison Sinatro finished with 24 digs.
The Cardinals dominated defensively, controlling digs 75-71 and had a 7-3 advantage in blocks, while the Chargers had a slight 6-5 edge in aces.
With the win, Plattsburgh State rises to 8-10 overall and returns to State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action at 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 17, at Oneonta. Colby-Sawyer falls to 7-10 with the loss and next hosts Emmanuel on Saturday, Oct. 18.
Thanks to a 5-0 surge, the Cardinals quickly jumped out to a 7-3 lead, but Colby-Sawyer countered with 5-0 and 3-0 runs and took an 11-8 lead halfway through the opening set. The Cardinals regained a 19-16 lead after back-to-back kills from Girma and a kill from Salphine began and ended a 5-0 outburst. Four straight points late in the set pushed Plattsburgh's lead to 23-17 as the Cardinals took set one 25-20.
After three straight points from Plattsburgh made the score 9-7 Chargers, the momentum flipped to Colby-Sawyer as back-to-back runs gave the Chargers an 18-9 lead, before taking the second set 25-15.
The third set was a back-and-forth affair with each team exchanging runs until an Estime kill late in the set cushioned Plattsburgh's lead to 23-20. However, Colby-Sawyer scored the next three points and tied the set at 23 before the Cardinals ended the set decisively with a kill from Girma and an ace from Almeida for a 25-23 set win.
Plattsburgh ran away in the fourth set after Estime's service run, featuring three service aces and a kill from Estime, gave the Cardinals a 10-4 lead. Another run halfway through the set gave the Cardinals a commanding 20-9 lead, putting the game out of reach. A kill from Salphine to end the set closed the door on the Chargers and secured a 25-17 set win and a 3-1 match victory.
