PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Despite a competitive two sets, the Plattsburgh State women's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (25-21, 27-25, 25-18) decision to Oswego State in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action on Friday evening at Memorial Hall.
Junior outside hitter
Liya Girma (Sachse, Texas / Bishop Lynch) led the way for Plattsburgh with a double-double, recording a game-high 15 kills to pair with 10 digs. Sophomore setter
Anabella Almeida (Pine Bush, N.Y. / Pine Bush), along with first-year setter
Emily O'Brien (Monroe, N.Y. / Monroe-Woodbury), set up the Cardinal attack with 18 and 16 assists, respectively. On the defensive end, senior libero
Bridget Ryan was a force on the back line, defending a game-high 18 digs, while seniors
Kyleigh Ganz (Phoenix, Ariz. / Seton Catholic Prep) and
Katie Salphine (Le Roy, N.Y. / Le Roy) combined for a block assist.
For the Lakers, Priscila McReynolds led her team in kills with 14, set up by a game-high 37 assists from Mya Bush. Grace Gdovin recorded 15 digs, and McReynolds and Alaina Dudzinski had three block assists.
Overall, for the match, Plattsburgh owned a 5-3 advantage in aces and a slight 50-49 edge in digs, but the Lakers led the way in blocks 4-1.
Plattsburgh State drops to 7-9 (1-1 SUNYAC) with the loss and is back in action tomorrow, Oct. 11, when the team welcomes Canton at 1 p.m. Oswego State moves to 15-3 (3-0 SUNYAC) with the win and next travels to Potsdam tomorrow, Oct. 11.
After the Lakers took an early 4-2 lead, the Cardinals took their first lead of the set after ripping off a 4-0 run that saw kills from
Iris Mulvey (Middle Island, N.Y. / Longwood) and Girma, which made the score 9-7 Cardinals. Oswego regained a 13-10 lead after a 4-0 run of their own until the Cardinals tied the score at 16 thanks to a kill from Mulvey. The Lakers went back ahead after scoring three straight points and late in the set led 23-20 before scoring back-to-back points for a 25-21 set win.
The second set was just as close as the first, with multiple lead changes as the Cardinals used a 5-0 surge featuring two kills from Girma and a service ace from Almeida to take a 13-12 lead. The lead continued to go back and forth until a kill from the Lakers made the score 24-24 and flipped the momentum. Oswego went on to score four of the next five points for a 27-25 set win.
The Lakers took an early 7-2 lead, however, the Cardinals battled back, scoring back-to-back points, which made the score 13-8 Lakers. Unfortunately, the momentum was still with Oswego as three straight points from the Lakers made the score 21-12 and put the set out of reach as Plattsburgh fell 25-18 in the third and final set.
