No. 7 Women's Ice Hockey Defeats Buffalo State in Road SUNYAC Contest

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The No. 7 Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey used two second-period goals to take the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) win over Buffalo State on Saturday afternoon. Emily Kasprzak (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Pittsburgh Penguins Elite) scored for the fourth straight game, while Kate Conlon (New Hudson, Mich./Little Caesars) netted the game-winner.

The Plattsburgh State Cardinals currently are the No. 7 team in the latest USCHO.com Division III Top-15 poll.

Molly Riggi (Farmingdale, N.J./New Jersey Titans) and Adriana Urban (Monroe, N.J./Hoosac School) each assisted on the first goal of the night, while Ciara Wall (Somerville, Mass./New Hampshire) assisted on the game-winner. Chloe Lewis (Monson, Mass./Northwood School) earned her 13th win of the season in net, making 16 saves in 60 minutes of action.

Both teams generated one power play goal, with Plattsburgh finishing 1-8 and Buffalo State going 1-4. The Cardinals outshot the Bengals over 60 minutes, 41-19, with Buffalo State netminder Jessica Auge making 39 saves in 59 and a half minutes.

Plattsburgh State moves to 13-2-1 (9-2-1 SUNYAC) and opens up a big week starting on Tuesday when they will take on No. 1 Middlebury on Tuesday on the road. Buffalo State falls to 5-13-1 (1-10-1 SUNYAC) and next travels to No. 6 Oswego State on Friday, Jan. 31.
In a scoreless first period, the Cardinals outshot the Bengals 11-5, but neither team could find the back of the net. Plattsburgh went scoreless on two power play chances, while Buffalo State could not score on their advantage opportunity.

In the second period, the Cardinals unleashed 22 shots on the opposition while holding them to six, earning five power plays in the stanza. Plattsburgh finally got on the board in their second advantage chance of the period, as Kasprzak tallied a power play goal at the 9:25 mark with a top-shelf score on assists from Riggi and Urban.

After two more power plays for the Cardinals ended in the score remaining 1-0, as Conlon tallied her first goal since Nov. 23 also against Buffalo State, which capped a streak of three goals in four games for the first-year. Conlon picked up the score off an assist from Wall, who leads the team with nine assists and 12 points.

The 2-0 lead held for the Cardinals into the third period, but the Bengals posted a strong effort in the final stanza. They held the Cards to eight shots and were able to get within one goal on their fourth and final power play with a Grace Zwolak score at the 16:15 mark.

With just a one-goal game, the Plattsburgh defense held strong, not allowing a single shot on goal the rest of the way to pick up the SUNYAC win.
