No. 7 Women's Ice Hockey Dominates Morrisville With Season-High Seven Goals in a SUNYAC Road Win

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The No. 7 Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey team cruised to a dominant 7-0 win on Saturday afternoon, taking down the Morrisville Mustangs in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action. Plattsburgh had seven different goal scorers on the day for a season-high total and their most since a 7-0 win over Buffalo State on Jan. 19, 2024.

The Plattsburgh State Cardinals are currently the No. 7 in the USCHO.com Division Top-15 Poll.

Of the seven different goal scorers Ciara Wall (Somerville, Mass./New Hampshire) and Seoyoung Yoo (Yongin, Republic of Korea/Ontario Hockey Academy) were the only two to also add an assist to their tally. Taya Balfour (Moorestown, N.J./Philadelphia Jr. Flyers) netted her first goal of the season for the game-winner, while Sydnee Francis (Canton, N.Y./Nepean Jr. Wildcats), Maeghan Forsyth (Billings, Mont./Notre Dame Hounds), Emily Kasprzak (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Pittsburgh Penguins Elite), and Mae Olshansky (Las Vegas, Nev./North American Hockey Academy) also recorded goals.

Kayson Ruegge (Edmond, Okla./Philadelphia Jr. Flyers), Adriana Urban (Monroe, N.J./Hoosac School), and Molly Riggi (Farmingdale, N.J./New Jersey Titans) each had two assists in the win. Marina McCann (Bear, Del./St. Louis Lady Blues) also had her first career point with an assist in the third period.

Chloe Lewis (Monson, Mass/Northwood School) picked up her 11th win of the season with a 14-save shutout for the Cardinals in net.

As they did in every facet of the game, the Cardinals dominated special teams, going 2-3 on the power play, while holding the Mustangs scoreless in three tries. The Cards also outshot the host team 37-14.
Plattsburgh State moves to 11-3-1 (7-2-1 SUNYAC) with the win and next travels to Buffalo State on Friday, Jan. 24. Morrisville falls to 6-8 (3-4 SUNYAC) and next take on Cortland on Friday, Jan. 24 on the road.

While the final score showed an outstanding scoring effort from the Cardinals, it did take some time before the offense was kickstarted. Balfour opened up the scoring for Plattsburgh State after over 15 minutes of scoreless hockey, notching her first goal of the season and fifth of her career at the 15:23 mark of the first period, with Ruegge adding an assist.

The Balfour goal opened up the floodgates as the Cardinals poured on three goals in each of the final two periods. Olshansky tallied her second goal of the weekend just over nine minutes into the second period with Riggi and Briget Orr (Excelsior, Minn./North American Hockey Academy) earning assists on the score. Yoo added the third goal of the game just over a minute later as her second score of the season trickled under the Morrisville goaltender and into the back of the net.

The Cardinals continued their hot offensive play with a power play goal on their first advantage chance of the afternoon, as Wall recorded her second goal of the season with a score on the doorstep thanks to an excellent pass from Urban, putting Plattsburgh up 4-0.

The four-goal lead stood until the 7:02 mark of the third period when Kasprzak tallied a power-play goal off assists from Yoo and McCann to give the Cards a 5-0 advantage. Francis scored her second career goal later in the period at the 13:59 mark, while Forsyth added her second goal of the season at the 16:35 mark as Plattsburgh State skated to the 7-0 win.

Sydney Canham made 30 saves in 60 minutes of action for the Mustangs.
