Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey | | Caleb Philips, Director of Athletic Communications

Chloe Lewis, No. 7 Women's Ice Hockey Shut Out No. 6 Oswego State 2-0

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.Chloe Lewis (Monson, Mass./Northwood School) and the No. 7 Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey shutout the No. 6 Oswego State Lakers on Friday evening, taking the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) matchup by a score of 2-0. Lewis made 28 saves, earning her fourth shutout of the season in the process.

The Plattsburgh State Cardinals are ranked at No. 7 in the most recent USCHO.com Division Top-15 Poll, while Oswego State is No. 6.

Mattie Norton (Glen Carbon, Ill./St. Louis Lady Blues) notched the game-winner for the Cardinals in the win, knocking in her fourth goal of the season on a power play opportunity in the second period. Tessa Morris (Grand Island, N.Y./Rome Girl's Hockey) gave the team a huge goal in the third period, giving the team a two-point cushion.

The teams were even in shots after 60 minutes, with both squads putting 28 shots on net. The Cardinals, however, made the difference on special teams, killing six Lakers' power plays, while going 1-3 on the advantage themselves.

Plattsburgh State moves to 9-2-1 (5-1-1 SUNYAC) with the win, while Oswego State falls to 8-1-1 (5-1-1 SUNYAC) with the loss. The teams will meet again tomorrow, Jan. 11, with a 1 p.m. puck drop in their regular season finale.

The first period set the stage for the next two periods, as the two teams played a very even and well-played game of hockey through 20 minutes. Neither team was able to gain much of advantage throughout and both Lewis and Lexi Levy were excellent between the pipes. The Lakers ended the period ahead in shots, 9-8, where two power plays allowed them the advantage there. Oswego had two advantage opportunities and went scoreless, while Plattsburgh failed to score in their lone chance on the power play in the first period.

The second period saw the Cardinals continue to excel on the power play, as two advantage opportunities for Oswego State in the second period were successfully killed before Plattsburgh went on their first power play of the period at the 9:50 mark of the stanza. Norton converted on the chance, as a Laker lost control of the puck below the goal line allowing Norton to pick up the loose puck deep in the offensive zone. The defender opted for a backhanded try as she skated along the crease, which Levy turned away. On the rebound, Norton was able to control the loose puck on the opposite side of the net, depositing the puck into the top shelf for her fourth goal of the season. Mae Olshansky (Las Vegas, Nev./North American Hockey Academy) notched an assist on the play, helping to deflect the puck to Norton on the rebound.

The Cardinals held the 1-0 lead through the final half of the period, holding the goal advantage into the intermission.

In the final period of play, Morris gave the Cardinals a huge cushion with her fourth goal of the season at the 2:21 mark. After a loose puck on a faceoff found its way to Su-An Cho (Madison, Ala./Florida Alliance), the junior wrapped the puck along the back boards where Emily Kasprzak (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Pittsburgh Penguins Elite) was able to get the puck off the boards and towards the crease. Morris was waiting just outside the paint, knocking in the pass from Kasprzak glove side for her fourth goal of the year.

The Cardinals made the two-goal lead stand, killing off two Oswego power plays after the goal and also holding strong with the goalie out of the net in the final minutes. Lewis stood tall as well, making 10 saves in the final period to give the Cardinals the 2-0 victory.

Lexi Levy made 26 saves for Oswego State as she took the loss.
