SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's volleyball team dropped a pair of matches on the road at the Skidmore Classic, falling to Skidmore 3-0 (25-19, 25-9, 25-20) and Connecticut College 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 25-14).
Sophomore right-side hitter
Darby Collyear (Rockwall, Texas / Rockwall) earned All-Tournament Team Honors for her performance at the Skidmore Classic. This weekend Collyear racked up 18 points off of 16 kills, two block assists, and one service ace while also registering 11 digs.
Plattsburgh moves to 0-6 overall and next travels to Vermont State University-Castleton for the VTSU-Castleton Tri-Match on Saturday, Sep. 14 as they take on VTSU-Castleton at 11 a.m. followed by a match with SUNY Delhi at 1 p.m. Skidmore moves to 1-5 overall and next plays Cortland later today in the Skidmore Classic finale while Connecticut College moves to 4-0 overall and next hosts Elms on Wednesday, Sep. 11.
Skidmore 3, Plattsburgh 0 (25-19, 25-9, 25-20)
The Cardinals matched the Thoroughbreds in digs with 37 and had the edge in blocks 5-4. The Thoroughbreds collected 16 service aces while the Cardinals only had four.
Sophomore outside hitter
Liya Girma (Sachse, Texas / Bishop Lynch) led the Cardinals in points with 9.5 registering six kills, three services aces, and a block assist. Collyear contributed to the offensive game with seven points on five kills, two block assists, and one service ace. Sophomore defensive specialist
KC Burke (Murrieta, Calif. / Northfield Mount Hermon) led all players with 14 digs while first-year setter
Anabella Almeida (Pine Bush, N.Y. / Pine Bush) had a career-high 11 assists.
For the Thoroughbreds, Jazlin Chen led all players with 13 points. Catriona Hoelperl registered 13 assists and Athena Braverman collected seven digs.
After the Thoroughbreds jumped out to a 2-0 lead, the Cardinals quickly tied it at 3 all. A 7-0 run from the Thoroughbreds gave them a 10-3 lead. The Cardinals responded with back-to-back kills from Collyear and Girma and made the score 10-5 Thoroughbreds. A 6-1 run for the Thoroughbreds extended their lead to 18-9 but the Cardinals battled back scoring four straight and made the score 18-13. The Thoroughbreds ended the set with two 3-0 runs broken up by an attacking error by Natalie Pedersen en route to a 25-15 win.
Girma registered a kill to put the Cardinals on the board and made the score 1 all to start the second set. The Thoroughbreds responded with back-to-back points and regained the lead 3-1 before adding to their lead with a 4-0 run that made the score 8-3. After both teams traded points, another run for the Thoroughbreds extended their lead to 14-4. The Thoroughbreds didn't lose momentum and ended the second set on a 7-1 run and won 25-9.
The Cardinals scored the first point of the set followed by four straight points from the Thoroughbreds that made the score 4-1. After a kill and service ace from Girma made the score 4-3 Thoroughbreds, the Cardinals scored three straight and took a 6-5 lead. After the Thoroughbreds tied the score a kill from
Iris Mulvey (Middle Island, N.Y. / Longwood) and a service ace from Collyear capped off a 3-0 run that made the score 9-6 Cardinals. Both teams traded runs as the Cardinals extended their lead to 12-9. A kill from Madison Manning gave the Thoroughbreds a 16-15 lead momentarily before back-to-back points from Collyear and Girma made the score 17-16 Cardinals. Manning and
Maggie Lyon (Ballston Spa, N.Y. / Ballston Spa) traded points and made the score 18 all before a run from the Thoroughbreds gave them a 23-18 lead. Mulvey ended the run, but the Thoroughbreds went on to win the third set 25-20 to secure the 3-0 victory.
Connecticut College 3, Plattsburgh 0 (25-20, 25-16, 25-14)
The Camels had a slight edge in digs 36-35 and won the block battle at the front of the net 7-5. The Cardinals had five service aces to the Camels' seven.
Girma picked up her second double-double of the season with 13 digs and 11 kills while Almeida ties her career-high in assists with 11.

Katie Salphine (Le Roy, N.Y. / Le Roy), and Mulvey all registered two blocks.
For the Camels, Katherine Randall led her team in kills with 11 while Sienna McCormack led in digs with 11. Josie Kelly led all players in assists with 16.
A kill from Girma ended a quick 2-0 run for the Camels but the Camels responded with three straight and took a 5-1 lead to open the first set. A kill from Collyear ended the run and the Cardinals followed that up with a 6-0 run and took the lead 8-7. The Camels were quick to respond with a pair of runs that gave them a 16-9 lead. The Cardinals battled back and two service aces from Burke made the score 23-20 Camels, but the Camels went on to score the next two points winning the first set 25-20.
Salphine started the second set off with a kill giving the Cardinals the early lead before an attacking error from Girma tied the score at 4. Both teams traded 3-0 runs and knotted the score at 7. A block at the front of the net gave the Camels their first lead of the set and Randall added to it with a kill the following play that made the score 11-9. The match stayed competitive but a run from the Camels gave them their largest lead at 17-13 and they would hold on to that lead ultimately winning the set 25-16.
A service ace from Girma gave the Cardinals a 3-1 lead to start the third set. The Camels responded with a 5-0 run and took the lead 6-3. A kill from Girma brought the Cardinals within two but a 6-0 run for the Camels extended their lead to 16-8. It was Girma again as she halted the Camels' run and gave the Cardinals some momentum as they went on a run of their own and made the score 18-12 Camels. After trading points the Camels ended the set with six straight points and won 25-14 clinching the match victory.
