No. 17 Men's Soccer Earns Senior Day Tie Against Morrisville

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The No. 17 Plattsburgh State men's soccer team took a 0-0 tie on Saturday against Morrisville, earning a point in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNAYC) standings. Before the match, the Cardinals celebrated their five seniors, Modou Badjie (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston), Brian Coughlan (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River), John Hayes (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River), Teddy Healy (Amityville, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial), and Thomas O'Neill (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa).

Plattsburgh State is currently ranked No. 17 in the United Soccer Coaches (USC) Division III National Poll.

Healy earned his third shutout of the season in goal, as he did not see a shot on goal in 90 minutes of action, moving to 6-0-3 on the year. The Cardinals outshot the Mustangs 19-3, as the opposition was content to let their defense take priority throughout the game. Hayes led the team with five total shots, while Badjie and Coughlan each had three shots.

With the tie, the Cardinals remain unbeaten, moving to 6-0-3 (1-0-1 SUNYAC) on the season. They next head to No. 12 Cortland for a fantastic matchup between two of the conference's best teams. Morrisville moves to 3-2-3 (0-0-1 SUNAYC) on the year, earning a tie in their first-ever matchup as a member of the SUNYAC. The team next heads to Buffalo State for another SUNYAC matchup on Wednesday, Oct. 3.

For the vast majority of the game, the Cardinals dominated possession of the ball, as Morrisville was happy to lean on their back line and goalkeeper over the 90-minute match. Plattsburgh had plenty of chances in the first half to score, highlighted by shots on goal in the 44th minute from Connor Howe (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay-East Fishkill) and Alex Guevara (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas). Morrisville had a great look in the 45th minute, as a shot from just inside the 18-yard box was blocked by Coughlan and an ensuing corner gave the Mustangs a chance for a halftime lead, but the Cardinals were able to clear as time expired.

In the second half, the Morrisville strategy to put all their energy effort, and focus was more evident as they rarely looked to push the ball in their attacking third unless they had a strong advantage. For Plattsburgh, they were still unable to produce good looks on goal with the Mustangs primarily in their own defensive third. As teams played physical a game in the Cards' offensive third, Plattsburgh had a near goal in the 84th minute, as the ball broke through the Morrisville backline. Hayes was there for a tap-in within the six, but the ball found the woodwork instead of the back of the net, keeping the game tied at zero.

The tie held through the next several minutes, as a Badjie shot in the 90th minute was saved, securing the draw.

Ronaldo Fatolou earned the shutout in goal for Morrisville, making four saves on the day.
