PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's volleyball team swept SUNY Poly 3-0 (25-21, 25-11, 25-14) and Anna Maria 3-0 (25-8, 25-13, 25-23) on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Hall in non-conference action.
Plattsburgh State rises to 3-9 overall and next heads to St. Lawrence on Saturday, Sept. 28 for a tri-match squaring off against RIT at 4 p.m. followed by a match with host St. Lawrence at 6 p.m. SUNY Poly moves to 1-7 and are back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 25 with a match against Bard while Anna Maria falls to 1-8 and are back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 24 with a match against Worcester State.
Plattsburgh State 3, SUNY Poly 0 (25-21, 25-11, 25-14)
The Cardinals dominated the state sheet against the Wildcats, holding the upper hand in service aces (15-2) and blocks (5-2). The Cardinals had a slight edge in digs 29-28 and hit .224 for the match while holding the Wildcats to .015.
Sophomore outside hitter/right side
Iris Mulvey (Middle Island, N.Y. / Longwood) led the Cardinal attack with nine kills while hitting .474 for the match. First-year setter
Anabella Almeida (Pine Bush, N.Y. / Pine Bush) keyed the Cardinal attack with 13 assists. Junior defensive specialist
Bridget Ryan (Mattituck N.Y. /Mattituck) had eight digs on the defensive end for the Cardinals. Junior outside hitter
Maggie Lyon (Ballston Spa, N.Y. / Ballston Spa) led all players in aces with four while also picking up two block assists.
For the Wildcats, Grace Southwick led all players in assists with 15 while Daniella Aluisio had six kills. Samantha Dee registered seven digs.
The Cardinals opened the first set with three straight led by two service aces from Almeida before the Wildcats scored back-to-back points and made the score 3-2 Cardinals. It was another run for the Cardinals that extended their lead to 7-2. The Wildcats responded with a run of their own and made the score 7-5 Cardinals. An ace from
Liya Girma (Sachse, Texas) and a kill from Mulvey gave the Cardinals a commanding 18-11 lead. The Wildcats battled back and went on a 5-0 run and made the score 18-16. After a service ace from Brooke Durfee brought the Wildcats within one, the Cardinals scored the next three points to win the first set 25-21.
After an attacking error gave the Wildcats an early 2-1 lead, the Cardinals went on a 9-0 run led by three service aces from Lyon that made the score 10-2 Cardinals. After a service error ended the run, the Cardinals offense didn't lose any momentum as they responded with a 7-0 run led by three kills from Mulvey that made the score 17-3 Cardinals. The Wildcats went on a 4-0 run and made the score 18-8 but the Cardinals' offense was too much as they went on to win 25-11.
The Wildcats jumped out to a 5-1 lead to start the third set but a 4-0 run for the Cardinals capped off by a service ace from
Melina Morillo (Bronx, N.Y. / Bronx Latin) made the score 7-6 Cardinals. Another run for the Cardinals extended their lead to 14-9. The Wildcats couldn't string along any runs to match the Cardinals' scoring and another 4-0 run for the Cardinals made the score 23-13 and put the game out of reach. The Cardinals went on to win the third set 25-14 securing a 3-0 match victory.
Plattsburgh State 3, Anna Maria 0 (25-8, 25-13, 25-23)
The Cardinals hit .333 for the match en route to a dominant 3-0 win. The Cardinals held a 17-5 advantage in service aces and a 40-32 advantage in digs. The Cardinals had a slight edge in blocks 2-1.
Mulvey's 13-kill, eight-dig performance helped lead the way for the Cardinals while sophomore right-side hitter
Darby Collyear (Rockwall Texas, Rockwall) had six kills and one block assist. Almeida led all players in assists with 13 while picking up a career-high seven service aces. Ryan had another solid outing in the back row as she led all players in digs with 12.
For the Amcats, Gia Hall led her team in assists with nine while Lauren Decoteau led the team in kills with four and Jana Hunt picked up 10 digs.
The Cardinals controlled the tempo early as they jumped out to a 6-0 lead before a service error and a kill from Bri Franklin broke up the run and made the score 6-2. Two kills from Collyear and one from Mulvey extended the Cardinals' lead to 9-2. After a 4-0 run capped off by a kill from Mulvey had the Cardinals ahead 13-4 they cruised to a 25-8 win.

Lexi Carfi (Syracuse, N.Y. / Liverpool) opened up the second set for the Cardinals giving them a 2-0 lead. A quick run for the Cardinals extended that lead to 8-3 after a kill from Lyon. After trading points multiple times, the Amcats battled back and made the score 11-7. The Cardinals' offense responded and a kill from
Sanaia Estime (West Hempstead, N.Y. / West Hempstead) doubled the Cardinals' lead to 14-7. A 5-0 run led by two service aces from Almeida made the score 20-10 and the Cardinals went on to win the second set 25-13.
The Amcats opened the scoring in the third set with a kill from Franklin, but the Cardinals responded quickly with a 5-0 run led by two kills from Mulvey that made the score 5-1 Cardinals. Five straight from the Amcats brought them within two and made the score 12-10 Cardinals. A 3-0 run for the Cardinals cushioned their lead but a 3-0 run for the Amcats brought them back within one and made the score 17-16 Cardinals. An attacking error by the Cardinals tied the game at 19 before back-to-back points gave the Amcats a 21-20 lead. After trading service errors and a kill from Hall made the score 23-21, four straight points for the Cardinals put the game away 25-23 to secure a 3-0 match victory.
