FREDONIA, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's soccer team took home a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) road win on Saturday afternoon, defeating Fredonia 1-0. The win snapped a three-game losing skid for the Cards, as
Jessica Mare (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) tallied her first career score for the game-winner.
Mare scored the game's only goal in the 43
rd minute just before halftime, as the Cards outshot Fredonia 15-12 over 90 minutes of action.
Lauren Haley (LaGrange, N.Y./Arlington) earned her second win of the season in goal, making six saves for her second shutout of the year. The Cards tallied six shots on goal, with two coming from Mare and three from
Macie Bolton (Belchertown, Mass./Belchertown).
Plattsburgh State moves to 2-5 (1-0 SUNYAC) and next takes on RPI at home on Wednesday, Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. Fredonia falls to 4-4 (0-1 SUNYAC) and next heads to SUNY Canton for a road SUNYAC matchup.
From the outset, the game looked to be a game of swings, as each team found opportunities throughout. Early on, the Blue Devils had some good looks, with a shot being saved in the second minute by Haley, and with another going off the woodwork in the 13
th minute.
The back and forth continued into the end of the first off, but in the final five or so minutes, the Cards offense was able to generate three shots on goal, with the second one being Mare's goal.
The game-winner came in the 43
rd minute, as Bolton looked to pass the ball into the box for Plattsburgh, but the initial pass was briefly intercepted by the Blue Devils' keeper. After the initial stop, the ball trickled away from the keeper, where her attempt to recover was blocked by a teammate, leaving just the ball and the goal in front of Mare. As the goalie attempted to get back up towards Mare, the senior tapped a shot into the back of the net, giving the Cardinals the lead.
The second half saw the Cards look to take a two-goal advantage and snap their three-game losing skid, coming out strong with two shots and three corners in the first four minutes of second-half action.
Fredonia came back with enough offense of their own, especially towards the end as Haley made three saves in the final 12 minutes, with her last save coming in the 84
th minute. From there, Plattsburgh played strong defense to keep the Blue Devils from any shot attempts, securing the league win.
Abby Szymkowiak took the loss in goal, making five saves in 90 minutes of action.
