Women's Tennis Posts 6-1 SUNYAC Win Over Oneonta in Home Opener

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's tennis team picked up a huge State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) win to begin their season, soundly defeating Oneonta 6-1 in their home opener. The Cards picked up their first win over the Red Dragons since 2012, snapping a 13-match losing streak against Oneonta.

The Cards move to 1-0 (1-0 SUNYAC) with the win and next host VTSU-Johnson on Wednesday, Sept. 4 for another home match. The Red Dragons fall to 0-1 (0-1 SUNYAC) and will next take head to Union for the Union Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 7.

Plattsburgh enjoyed a fantastic start to the day, taking all three doubles matches to earn the one point awarded for winning the majority of doubles matches. Megan Phelps (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) and Sophia Gottschall (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) started the day off with a 6-3 win at No. 3 doubles, followed closely by a win from Hallie Hurwitz (Beekmantown, N.Y./Beekmantown) and Kristy Cantwell (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) at No. 2 doubles, 7-5, to clinch the point for doubles. Ava Carey (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet) and Jacklin Mitchell (Plattsburgh, N.Y/Peru) concluded doubles play with a 7-5 win in the No. 1 doubles slot, as the Cards swept the dual action.

Singles play saw an equally great start, as Phelps quickly won her match at No. 6 singles, 6-0, 6-2, and Gottschall made quick work as well in No. 4 singles winning 6-1, 6-1. Cantwell clinched the conference win for the Cards with a strong victory as well, winning 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 singles.

Hurwitz kept the hot play going at No. 2 singles, winning a fantastic match 7-5, 3-6, 10-6, for her second career win in the second singles slot. Carey played an extremely competitive match at No. 1 singles, her first career appearance in the top spot, losing 6-4, 4-6, 7-10. Mitchell capped off the day with the final match of the day winning 7-6 (7-0), 6-4, picking up from where she left off last year as she now stands at 11-1 in singles in her young Plattsburgh career.
