NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's tennis team fell to the defending State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Champions on Saturday afternoon, 7-0.
The Cardinals fall to 2-1 (1-1 SUNAYC) and next take on Mount Saint Mary College on Sunday, Sept. 15 at 11 a.m. The New Paltz Hawks moved to 2-0 (1-0 SUNYAC) and next compete in the Vassar Tournament on Sunday, Sept. 15.
The doubles matches saw three wins for the Hawks, but Plattsburgh played tough, scoring a point in both the No. 2 doubles match with
Hallie Hurwitz (Beekmantown, N.Y./Beekmantown) and
Kristy Cantwell (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) and the No. 3 doubles match including
Sophia Gottschall (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) and
Megan Phelps (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa).
Singles action began with some quick wins for New Paltz, allowing the Hawks to clinch the win after taking a 4-0 lead in the match. The same continued as they won the final three matches, winning each competition of the day. Both
Jacklin Mitchell (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Peru) and Gottschall were able to score in each set, falling 1-6, 1-6 in their matches at No. 3 and No. 4 singles.
