POTSDAM, N.Y. – The No. 16 Plattsburgh State men's soccer team took a 1-1 road draw against Clarkson on Wednesday evening, as
Bradyn Primus (Goshen, N.Y./Goshen) netted the Card's lone goal of the game just 3:45 into the game's action.
The Cardinals are currently ranked at No. 16 in the United Soccer Coaches (USC) National Division III Poll.
Primus scored his second goal of the season to pace the Cardinal offense, while
John Hayes (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) and
Thomas O'Neill (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa Park) each had shots on goal.
Teddy Healy (Amityville, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) played all 90 minutes in goal to earn the tie, as he made zero saves and allowed one goal.
The Cards had plenty of chances throughout the night, outshooting Clarkson 12-2 through the entire 90 minutes while also earning eight corners to the Golden Knights four.
Plattsburgh State moves to 3-0-2 with the tie and heads to Union, on Saturday, Sept. 14 for their next match. Clarkson moves to 2-0-2 on the season and will play at Alfred State on Saturday, Sept. 14 for their next game.
The Cardinals got the game started off excellently, as Primus gave the Cardinals the lead in the fourth minute of action. A
Xavier Kamba (Valley Cottage, N.Y./Nyack) pass into the box was deflected by a Clarkson defender and fell right to the feet of Primus, who finished off the play with his left foot for an easy shot with 18 yards.
The 1-0 Plattsburgh lead stood for exactly 18 minutes, until Zach Shufelt scored his second goal of the season off an assist from Daniel Medina, equalizing the game at one score apiece.
A foul in the box on Clarkson gave the Cards an excellent opportunity, but
Brian Coughlan's (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) penalty kick hit the post and deflected out of bounds to keep the score tied at one and ended Coughlan's perfect string of penalty kicks at five.
The Plattsburgh attack continued into the second half as a header from O'Neill nearly found the back of the net, but was saved by the Golden Knight's keeper.
The second half was much of the same as the Cardinals had opportunity after opportunity, but just could not put one in the back of the net. The best chance for the Cards down the stretch came with just a few seconds left in the game, as Primus had a shot miss off the woodwork, ending the game and keeping the score tied at one.
Carter Kladstrup earned the tie for Clarkson in net, making two saves.
