Softball Concludes 2024 Season Falling in Doubleheader SUNYAC Action at Cortland

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State softball team wrapped up their regular season on Saturday afternoon, dropping two State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) games to Cortland on Saturday. The Cardinals will graduate five seniors this year, as Dolly Garguilo (Monroe, N.Y./Washingtonville), Julia Golino (Mount Sinai, N.Y./Mount Sinai), Dimitra Mouhteros (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville), Claire Palmer (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern), and Kaitlin Smith (New Windsor, N.Y./Washingtonville) will graduate this year.

Sara Isaacs (Malta, N.Y./Shenendehowa) led the team with three hits on the day, scoring two runs as well. Megan Pillus (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Spackenkill) had a multi-hit day in game one, driving in a run as well.

Plattsburgh State concludes its season at 11-25 (3-15 SUNYAC) while Cortland moves to 25-7 (15-3 SUNYAC). Cortland will next appear in the SUNYAC Tournament, where the No. 2 seeded Red Dragons will take on the No. 5 seeded Fredonia Blue Devils.

Game One: Cortland 10, Plattsburgh 4

The Cardinals jumped out to an early 3-0 in game one but ended up falling 10-4 in the first game of the day. Isaacs had two hits and two runs scored, while Pillus was 2-3 with a double, RBI, and HBP.
Golino had a double and an RBI for Plattsburgh while Mouhteros reached three times for the Cards with a single, an HBP, and a walk. Morgan Ormerod (Valatie, N.Y./Ichabod Crane) took the loss in the circle, falling to 6-8 as she went 4.2 innings and surrendered nine earned runs. Sarah Milyko (Goshen, N.Y./Chester Academy) tossed 1.1 innings of scoreless relief for the Cards, allowing just two hits.

Plattsburgh jumped out to the early lead as Palmer was hit to begin the game and was moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt from Gwen Noll (Massapequa, N.Y./St. Anthony's). Isaacs followed with a single to put runners on the corners and Golino then brought home Palmer with a sacrifice fly to center. After another HBP, Pillus doubled to right field to score Isaacs, giving Plattsburgh a 2-0 lead. An error in the second allowed a run to scored as well for the Cards, giving them a 3-0 lead.

From there, Cortland scored 10 unanswered runs, tacking on one in the second, three in the third to take the lead, two in the fourth, and then four in the fifth to pull away from Plattsburgh.

The Cardinals had a couple of chances in the middle innings, but could not bring another run across until the seventh, when a Michelle DeFina (Commack, N.Y./Commack) sacrifice fly brought home Isaacs. That was all the Cards could muster in the seventh, however, falling 10-4 in game one.

McKenna Barry earned the win on the mound for Cortland, throwing a complete game and allowing just three earned runs. Halle Wright was 4-4 with two runs scored and Gina Meyers had two triples for the Red Dragons, finishing 3-4 with two runs and an RBI.

Game Two: Cortland 13, Plattsburgh 0 (5 innings)

Cortland led from start to finish in game one, as Kim Westenberg tossed a two-hit shutout to earn the doubleheader sweep for the Red Dragons. Isaacs and Garguilo picked up the lone hits for Plattsburgh.

Golino took the loss for Plattsburgh, lasting two innings, and giving up seven earned runs. Milyko allowed just one earned run in 1.2 innings, while Carly Gemmett (Colonie, N.Y/Colonie Central) went .1 innings and allowed two earned runs.

Cortland grabbed all the runs would need in the first, with a three-run frame but did not stop there, tacking on four in the second, and six in the fourth to set up the run-rule victory.

Westenberg was also 3-3 with three RBI at the plate to help out her own cause, while Danielle DeBonis and Julz Koch both homered.
