Baseball Concludes Season in SUNYAC Tournament; Falling 8-3 to Oswego State in an Elimination Game

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State baseball team dropped a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) elimination game against Oswego State, falling 8-3. After the Cardinals took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third, the Lakers responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to reclaim the lead and didn't look back as they tacked on four more runs for the win.

Jack Defayette (Rotterdam, N.Y. / Schalmont) had two hits including a double and a stolen base on the day. Kyle Cremin (Yorktown Heights, N.Y. / Kennedy Catholic) and Joey Di Rocco (Congers, N.Y. / Clarkstown South) both registered a hit while Cremin had two RBI and Di Rocco one off of a solo home run to left field. Alex Kornblau (Pound Ridge, N.Y. / Fox Lane) and Mike Rasquin (Garden City, N.Y. / Garden City) each scored a run for the Cardinal offense and drew a walk. Andrew Veit (Yaphank, N.Y. / Bellport) took the loss, striking out four batters and giving up five earned runs in 4.2 innings. Chris Santic (Stony Point, N.Y. / North Rockland) came out in relief and tossed 3.1 innings giving up just one run and striking out five.

Plattsburgh finishes the 2024 season 24-16, the team's best record since a 30-10 season in 2010.  Oswego State moves to 23-16 and will next play New Paltz in an elimination game today, May 11 at 4 pm.

The Lakers took a quick 1-0 lead at the bottom of the second. After Daniel Winchester singled to center field, he stole second and got into scoring position. Anthony Barone followed up with a single up the middle that brought Winchester in.

The Cardinals responded immediately in the next half-inning as Cremin singled in Rasquin and Kornblau. After a Rasquin walk and stolen base put Rasquin into scoring position, Kornblau was walked as well on a wild pitch that advanced Rasquin to third. Kornblau then stole second base followed by a Cremin single that scored both Rasquin and Kornblau and made the score 2-1 Cardinals.

The Lakers responded with a three-run inning in the bottom of the third. Blake VanDreason started the inning with a single and a stolen base followed by an Owen Parliament single that advanced VanDreason to third, and a CJ McCarthy three-run blast that made the score 4-2 Lakers.

After a three-up and three-down inning for Veit, VanDreason led off the bottom of the fifth with a home run. An error and a single put runners on first and second followed by a Tishawn Featherstone single that scored both runners and extended the Lakers' lead to 7-2. That Featherstone single ended the day for Veit and Santic came in relief and struck out the next batter to end the inning.

The Cardinals threatened to score in the seventh after a Defayette single and stolen base put him on second base but he was left stranded after the next three Cardinals were retired. The Lakers added a run in the bottom of the seventh on a solo home run to center field that made the score 8-2 Lakers.

Richie Paul came in for Oswego in the ninth and retired the first two batters before giving up a solo shot to Di Rocco that made the score 8-3 Lakers. The score would stand as Paul struck out the next batter to end the game.

Jacob Sanders earned the win with seven scoreless innings, allowing five hits and two walks, and striking out thirteen batters. Parliament and McCarthy both registered two hits, while Parliament scored two runs and McCarthy had three RBI and a run scored.
