GENESEO, N.Y. – After being shut out in the first half the Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse team only scored three goals in the second half as they dropped their season finale to Geneseo 20-3 in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action.
Senior attackers
Anthony Faber (Farmingdale, N.Y. / Farmingdale) and
John Eiseman (Farmingville, N.Y. / Sachem East), and sophomore midfielder
Tim Keenan (Poughquag, N.Y. / Arlington) all netted one goal each for the Cardinals.
Logan Jones (Bayport, N.Y. / Bayport-Blue Point) and
Donald Woods (Rocky Point, N.Y. / Rocky Point) both registered an assist as Jones assisted on Faber's goal and Woods on Keenan's goal. First-year defender
Fynn Whitlock (Middlebury, Vt. / Middlebury-Union) grabbed four ground balls and caused two turnovers for the Cardinals on the defensive end while sophomore defender
Connor Vanella (Holtsville, N.Y. / Sachem East) picked up three ground balls.
For the Knights, Riley Henselder, Cole Bollin, and Kevin Mouton all finished the day with four points as Henselder had three goals and an assist, Bollin two goals and two assists, and Mouton three goals and an assist.
The Cardinals only had 27 shots on the day compared to the Knights' 67. The Knights had a big advantage in ground balls 52-16 and won the faceoff battle 25-2. The Cardinals were 0-1 on extra man-up opportunities while the Knights were 1-2. On clear attempts the Cardinals were 21-29 and the Knights a perfect 14-14.
Plattsburgh finishes the season 4-12 overall (0-7 SUNYAC). Geneseo finishes their regular season 11-6 overall (6-1 SUNYAC) and holds the number two seed in the conference tournament as they take on the three-seeded Oswego State Lakers on Wednesday, May 1 at 6 pm.
The Cardinals were held scoreless in the first half on five shots while senior goalie
Dan Clements (Putnam Valley, N.Y. / Putnam Valley) faced 38 shots and made 10 saves. The Cardinal defense was able to force eight turnovers, but the offense had 14.
The Knights scored the first 15 goals of the game before Faber buried a shot on a Jones feed at the 6:51 mark in the third that made the score 15-1. Owen Eillick responded for the Knights just over two minutes later. Keenan scored the last goal of the quarter after he converted on a pass from Woods at the 1:17 mark and made the score 16-2 after three-quarters of play.
The Knights opened the fourth with a three-goal run before Eiseman ended the run as he put one in the back of the net at the 6:49 mark and made the score 19-3. Cody Dickinson tacked on another goal at the 5:33 mark and cushioned the Knights' lead to 20-3 which held for the remainder of the game as the Cardinals dropped a 20-3 decision to the Knights.
Clements finished the game with 18 saves in the loss for Plattsburgh. Junior goalie Andrew Tittmann had two saves in the win for Geneseo.
