PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State baseball team dropped the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) series finale against Oswego State on a snowy Wednesday afternoon, 14-0. The Lakes scored seven runs in the second inning and never looked back, scoring seven more for the series-clinching win.
Austin Caldwell (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) and
Adam Wein (North Rockland, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep) each had a base hit and walk for the Cardinal offense.
Conner Gonzalski (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) and
Jack Defayette (Rotterdam, N.Y./Schalmont) each registered hits as well for Plattsburgh.
Eric Agan (Burnt Hills, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) was charged with the loss, striking out four batters and giving up five earned runs in 1.2 innings of work.
Matt Edwards (Commack, N.Y./Commack) threw for the second day in a row, going 2.2 innings giving up just one run and striking out three.
The Cardinals fall to 20-12 (8-7 SUNYAC) and will look to solidify themselves in the playoff picture this weekend, taking on SUNY Brockport at home beginning on Friday, April 26 at 3 p.m. Oswego State moves to 17-12 (7-5 SUNYAC) and will next take on Fredonia in SUNYAC play this weekend on the road.
After a scoreless first inning for the first time in the three-game series between Oswego and Plattsburgh, the Lakers exploded for seven runs on seven hits in the second inning, highlighted by a Jelani Hamer three-run double. The Cards responded with three hits in the bottom of the second, but a double play and groundout ended the Plattsburgh rally.
From the second inning on, the Cardinals failed to get a hit and the Lakers cruised to the win as they scored a run in the third, two in the fourth, and then one in the fifth. In the sixth inning, Edwards kept the Lakers of the scoreboard, as he struck out three batters in the inning, holding the score at 11-0.
In the seventh, Oswego tacked on three more runs, holding a 14-0 advantage, meaning Plattsburgh would need five runs to hold off the run-rule to end the game after seven innings. After a leadoff walk to Caldwell, the Cardinals went down in order, ending the game and giving Oswego the victory.
Sean Dertinger earned the win with six scoreless innings, allowing just four hits and two walks, and striking out six batters. Tishawn Featherstone and Dylan Rosenberg each had four hit days, driving in and scoring two runs each, while Featherstone also picked up his 100
th career hit.
