Softball Splits SUNYAC Doubleheader with Fredonia Behind Ormerod's Strong Outing

GOWANDA, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State softball team earned their first State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) win of the season on Saturday, before falling in the second game of the doubleheader to split against Fredonia. The Cards won game one 3-1 behind an excellent outing from sophomore hurler Morgan Ormerod (Valatie, N.Y./Ichabod Crane) and then fell in game two 7-4.

Ormerod posted a complete game win, going all seven innings, and allowing just one run while striking out six batters. Julia Golino (Mount Sinai, N.Y./Mount Sinai) registered three hits in the game one win, scoring once, while Noll had two hits and a double. In game two, Sara Isaacs (Malta, N.Y./Shenendehowa) and Megan Pillus (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Spackenkil) each launched their first career homers.

Plattsburgh State moves to 6-12 (1-3 SUNYAC) on the season and will play Buffalo State tomorrow, April 14 at noon in a conference doubleheader. Fredonia moves to 6-12 (1-3 SUNYAC) as well and will host Potsdam at Gowanda High School on Sunday, April 14 at noon.

Game One: Plattsburgh 3, Fredonia 1

The Cards used a three-run fourth and an excellent outing from Ormerod to pick up their first SUNYAC win of the season on Saturday, winning 3-1. The sophomore right-hander allowed just two hits and one walk, retiring the first 12 batters of the game, and posting five 1-2-3 innings on the day. Michelle DeFIna (Commack, N.Y./Commack) drove in two runs with her lone hit of the day for Plattsburgh while Golino and Noll each had multi-hit efforts.

Both pitchers threw very well, as Kayla Jo Lynn allowed three runs with two being unearned in her outing to keep her Blue Devils in contention throughout. However, Ormerod was even more excellent for Plattsburgh State, as she baffled the Blue Devils hitters.

The Cards got all three of their runs in the fourth as Golino led the inning off with a single. After a sacrifice from Pillus put her in scoring position, back-to-back errors allowed the Golino to score and put two runners on for DeFina. DeFina singled, scoring two runs and putting Plattsburgh State up 3-0 in the top of the fourth.

Fredonia was able to respond with their only run in the fifth, as a leadoff single and sacrifice put a runner in scoring position with two outs. Erin Cunningham followed by singling to bring home the runner and cut the deficit to two runs. Ormerod then forced a pop-out to end the frame and keep the Cardinals ahead.

In the sixth, the Cardinals put two runners on to start the frame, but the next three batters were retired to end the threat. Ormerod worked around a walk in the sixth to keep the lead at two runs and then went 1-2-3 in the seventh, striking out the final batter of the game to earn her third win of the season.

Game Two: Fredonia 7, Plattsburgh 4

Despite solo homers from both Isaacs and Pillus, the Cards couldn't quell the Fredonia offense, falling in game two and settling for a SUNYAC split. Claire Palmer (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) added a two-run triple for Plattsburgh while Golino was charged with the loss in four innings pitched.

The Cards were the first to score in game two, as Palmer's triple brought in Emma Deo (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) and DeFina to put them up 2-0 in the second inning. Fredonia responded immediately, taking advantage of a couple of errors to tally four runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 4-2 lead.

In the third, Isaacs homered to straight-away center field, putting Plattsburgh State within a run, but a response from the Blue Devils came once again, as they scored twice in the following half inning to go up 6-3.

Pillus led off the fourth with her first career homer, pulling a shot down the left-field line to put the Cards back within two runs. The score held at 6-4 until the fifth when a solo homer from Megan Guidry put Fredonia 7-4.

Over the final two innings, Plattsburgh was unable to get a runner on base, falling to the Blue Devils in the second game of their twinbill.
