CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State baseball team fell in both ends of a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader on Saturday, falling to Cortland 12-1 and 3-0.
Andrew Veit (Yaphank, N.Y./Bellport) tossed 6.1 innings in game two, giving up just two runs but Plattsburgh couldn't get a run across to fall in the nightcap.
Veit finished with a line of 6.1 innings pitched, scattering eight hits, giving up two earned runs, and striking out six against the Red Dragons.
Aidan Diltz (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) had three hits in two games, scoring the only run of the day for the Cardinals as
Jack Defayette (Rotterdam, N.Y./Schalmont) picked up the RBI. Senior second baseman
Alex Kornblau (Pound Ridge, N.Y./Fox Lane) also recorded his 100
th career hit over the weekend, becoming the 21
st player in program history to do so and the second of the season for Plattsburgh.
The Cards fall to 11-7 (2-4 SUNYAC) on the year and will travel to Clarkson on Tuesday, April 2
nd, for their next game. The Red Dragons move to 12-8-1 (6-0 SUNYAC) and will play R.I.T. on Tuesday, April 2
nd, at home for their next outing.
Game One: Cortland 12, Plattsburgh 1 (7 innings)
The Red Dragons used a couple of big innings to down the Cardinals in game one, using a six-run sixth to enforce the run rule against Plattsburgh.
Diltz was 2-3 in game one, scoring a run, while Defayette drove him in with an RBI ground out in the seventh.
Chris Santic (Stony Point, N.Y./North Rockland) took the loss as he went 5.2 innings, giving up eight runs.
Kyle Cremin (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) reached base twice for Plattsburgh with a single and walk.
Cortland jumped to an early lead with two runs in the first, which ended up being all Matthew Nochowitz would need on the mound, picking up his second win of the season with six scoreless innings of work.
The Cards threatened in the third when Defayette and
Mike Rasquin (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) reached on back-to-back singles with one out. After a strikeout, Cremin walked, but Nochowitz induced an inning-ending groundout to get out of the jam.
In the bottom of the frame, the Red Dragons scored four runs on two hits, two walks, and an HBP, as Adam Mieczkowksi had a two-run double and Zachary Kringdon had an RBI double.
The next two frames saw zeroes on both ends, but Cortland picked up six runs on six hits in the bottom of the sixth to go up 12-0 and set up the chance to end the game early on the run-rule.
The Cards were able to get a rally going in the seventh, as Diltz led the frame off with a single to right and eventually came around to score on a Defayette groundout. Mikey Wandell stranded a runner on base, however, ending the game for the 12-1 Cortland win.
Nick Chemotti was 3-3 with four RBI for the Red Dragons, while Mat Bruno was 3-4 with two RBI and a homer.
Game Two: Cortland 3, Plattsburgh 0
Despite an excellent outing from Veit in the final game of the series and day, the Cards fell 3-0 in the series finale to Cortland. Plattsburgh was only able to pick up two hits and four walks in the second game, as they went scoreless in nine innings.
Rasquin and Diltz each had hits for Plattsburgh, as they generated the only offense for the Cards in the loss.
Dylan Bass (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) pitched 1.2 innings out of the pen, giving up one run and striking out one. Luis Misla earned the win for Cortland with five scoreless innings and eight strikeouts after a complete-game win earlier in the week, and Cam Darrow pitched 2.2 innings and struck out three to earn the save.
The Red Dragons scored a run in the first and fifth on RBI singles from Bruno, as the Cortland left fielder had two hits and two RBI to lead the offensive effort. Kringdon drove in the other run for Cortland with an RBI single in the eighth, as the Red Dragons gave just enough run support to their outstanding pitching.
