FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State baseball team fell in a low-scoring game on Sunday afternoon at Farmingdale, losing 2-0 to the Rams in a nine-inning affair.
Andrew Veit (Yaphank, N.Y./Bellport) took a hard-luck loss on the mound, giving up just one run in 5.2 innings of work.
Veit gave up just four hits and walked two batters while striking out as he moved to 1-2 on the season on the mound.
Alex Kornblau (Pound Ridge, N.Y./Fox Lane) had three hits on the day, finishing 3-4 as he was also hit by a pitch.
Jack Defayette (Schalmont, N.Y./Rotterdam) also had a hit for Plattsburgh and stole a base.
Tyler Kohn (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North) made his first appearance of the season for Plattsburgh tossing, 1.1 innings of scoreless baseball.
The Cards move to 5-3 on the season and next head to Penn State Berks for a game tomorrow, Monday, March 18 at 3:30 p.m. Farmingdale moves to 5-5 and has a 12-day gap before they next play Manhattanville on March 29, opening Skyline play.
The Cardinals had a fantastic chance to score early in the game as the Cards used an HBP and a fielder's choice to put two runners on with one out. After a strikeout, a walk loaded the bases, but Plattsburgh could not capitalize, stranding all three runners.
Back-to-back singles to start the third from Mike Rasuqin (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) and Kornbalu gave Plattsburgh two-on with none out, but a fly out and then double play kept the game scoreless through three frames.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Rams finally got on the board as they got a run across on a throw down to second on a stolen base, which allowed a runner from third to score.
In the following half-inning, the Cards had another strong chance to respond as a
Jonathan Beale (State Island, N.Y./St. Peter's Boys) single to lead off the frame and then a one-out Rasquin walk put the go-ahead run on base. A single from Kornblau followed by Beale was unable to score on the play. The next batter lifted a fly ball to left that Beale attempted to tag up on and score, but a perfect throw nabbed him at the plate to keep Farmingdale leading 1-0.
In the eighth, Plattsburgh once again loaded the bases with two outs but failed to score and Farmingdale responded with an insurance run on a sacrifice fly in the eighth.
The Cards put the tying run on base in the ninth, but were unable to score, locking in the final of 2-0.
Johnny Dougherty tossed five scoreless innings for Farmingdale to earn the win, while Derek Watts picked up the save with four scoreless innings out of the pen. Ryan Wasserman had two hits for the Rams while Jordan Lambert had the lone RBI and also had a hit for Farmingdale.
