Men's Lacrosse Falls to Norwich in Home Opener

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse team fell at home against the Norwich University Cadets in their first game of the season. After a closely contested first period, Norwich took control in the second outscoring the Cardinals 6-2 en route to their 18-9 victory. 
 
Donald Woods (Rocky Point, N.Y. / Rocky Point) and Tim Keenan (Poughquag, N.Y. / Arlington) led the Cardinals in goals with three each to complete the hat trick while Kennan also picked up an assist to lead the team in points with four. Other goals for the Cardinals came from John Eiseman (Farmingville, N.Y. / Sachem East) who had two, and Anthony Faber (Farmingdale, N.Y. / Farmingdale) also put one in the net while Eiseman had an assist to record three points and Faber an assist to record two points. First-year Fynn Whitlock (Middlebury, Vt. / Middlebury Union) led the Cardinals in ground balls with five. Jimbo Farrelly (West Nyack, N.Y. / Clarkstown South) led the Cardinals in face-off wins with four. 

For the Cadets, Christian Rainis and Tyler Seidel led the team in points with six as Rainis had five goals and an assist and Seidel had four goals and two assists. 
 
The Cardinals went 13 of 19 on clear attempts while the Cadets were 12 of 18. The Cadets won the faceoff battle 24-5. The Cardinals had eight penalties and went 0-4 on extra man-up opportunities and the Cadets had four penalties and went 3-8 on extra man opportunities. 
 
Plattsburgh falls to 0-1 and next hosts Mount Saint Mary College on Sunday, Feb. 25 at 1 pm. Norwich rises to 1-0 and next hosts Mitchell College on Saturday, Feb. 24 at 3 pm. 
 
Woods netted the first goal of the game on a Mike Walsh (Westchester, N.Y. / Lakeland) assist for the Cardinals in the opening two minutes. The Cadets tied the game with 8:15 remaining in the opening period. A minute later a goal from Drew Fleury put the Cadets on top. Kennan put one in the net that tied the game at 2 at the 3:43 mark. The Cadets ended the first with two straight goals, one coming from an extra man-up opportunity, that made the score 4-2 Cadets at the end of the period. 
 
The Cadets started the second with four unanswered goals coming from Matt Meehan, Fleury, Seidel, and Rainis while Keenan stopped the bleeding with a goal at the 4:11 mark that made the score 8-3 Cadets. The two teams traded goals as Woods got in on the action once again scoring off the assist from Cam Morin (Raynham, Mass. / Bridgewater-Raynham) before Mitchell McKay scored and made the score 10-4 after two periods of play. 
 
It was Woods again as he got the scoring started in the third on a pass from Eiseman. It was back and forth as the two teams responded to each goal by the other with Eiseman and Kennan scoring unassisted goals for the Cardinals that made the score 12-7 Cadets with 3:36 remaining in the period. A late goal from Seidel made the score 13-7 Cadets after three. 
 
The Cadets pulled away in the fourth quarter, scoring five of the period's seven goals. A Faber goal at the 6:20 mark helped break up the Cadets' three-goal run and made the score 16-8. The Cadets added two more insurance goals and Eiseman scored the final goal of the game with 2:11 left on the clock as the Cardinals fell 18-9. 
 
Sophomore goalie Jack Mulcahy (Poughkeepsie, N.Y. / Arlington) made seven saves in the first 30 minutes of play before senior goalie Dan Clements (Putnam Valley, N.Y. / Putnam Valley) stopped four shots in the final 30 minutes. The Cadets' junior goalie Thomas Hopkins turned away 14 shots in the victory.
