CORTLAND, N.Y. – The No. 2 Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey team closed the regular season with a 3-2 setback to No. 12 SUNY Cortland in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Arena. The loss snapped a 12-game winning streak for the Cardinals.
Plattsburgh State is ranked at No. 2 in the USCHO.com Women's Division III Top-15 Poll, while Cortland is ranked at No. 12.
Cortland came from behind to pull out the win, scoring twice in the final 2:58. Junior forward Natalie O'Brien tallied the game winner with 15 seconds left.
Plattsburgh State falls to 21-3-1 overall (16-2-0 SUNYAC) with the loss and hosts fourth-seeded SUNY Morrisville in the semifinal round of the SUNYAC Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 24, at 3 p.m. Cortland rises to 18-5-2 overall (13-4-1 SUNYAC) with the win and entertains third-seeded Oswego State in the SUNYAC Tournament semifinals on Saturday, Feb. 24, at 3 p.m.
Cortland struck first at 2:54 of the first period, scoring on the power play. Sophomore forward Fanny Aneborn passed down to senior defender Molly McCabe at the bottom of the left circle, and McCabe sent a pass toward the slot that deflected off first-year defender McKenzie Brown's skate and through the five-hole.

Ciara Wall (Somerville, Mass./University of New Hampshire) tied the score at 1-all at 8:53 of the first. Junior forward
Bridget Orr (Excelsior, Minn./North American Hockey Academy) dug the puck out of the corner to Wall, and Wall took a shot from the right circle that beat the goaltender glove side.
With just 1:28 left in the second period, graduate student forward
Ivy Boric (Newport Beach, Calif./Anaheim Lady Ducks) gave the Cardinals a 2-1 lead. With the two teams skating 4-on-4, first-year defender
Adriana Urban (Monroe, N.J./Hoosac School) passed D-to-D to graduate student defender
Kendall Wasik (Novi, Mich./HoneyBaked), and Wasik fed Boric in the left circle. Boric then snapped a one-time shot past the netminder glove side.
The Red Dragons tied the game with 2:58 remaining in regulation on the power play, as graduate student forward Dany Donegan scored on a backhanded shot from the left circle that navigated through a screen and inside the far post. Senior defender Kait Bourgeois and first-year forward Katie Mahoney also earned assists on the play.
O'Brien's game winner came with just 15 seconds left in the third period. Donegan took a shot from the top of the left circle that was saved, and O'Brien collected the rebound along the near post. She then slid the puck from her backhand to her forehand across the crease and scored low glove side.
The Cardinals finished with a 32-26 edge in shots on goal, while the Red Dragons were perfect on the power play, scoring on both opportunities they had with the extra skater. Plattsburgh State was scoreless on two power-play chances.
Graduate student goaltender
Lilla Nease (Lake Forest, Calif./Anaheim Lady Ducks) made 23 saves in the setback for the Cardinals, while junior goaltender Molly Goergen turned aside 30 shots in the win for the Red Dragons.
