Two Third Period Goals Give No. 2 Women's Ice Hockey 2-1 Win Over Potsdam

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The No. 2 Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey team scored two third-period goals to take down the visiting Potsdam Bears in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play on Friday night. Ciara Wall (Somerville, Mass./New Hampshire) and Emily Kasprzak (Buffalo, N.Y./Pittsburgh Penguins Elite) scored the Cardinal goals to lead the team to the win.

The Plattsburgh State Cardinals are the No.2 ranked team in the latest USCHO.com Division III Top-15 Poll.

Wall scored a power-play goal just before the 10-minute mark in the third period to open the scoring, while Kasprzak scored less than six minutes later for what was the eventual game-winner. Kendall Wasik (Novi, Michigan/HoneyBaked) and Adriana Urban (Monroe, N.J./Hoosac School) each tallied assists, and Lilla Nease (Lake Forest, Calif./Anaheim Lady Ducks) made 14 saves for the win in net.

Plattsburgh was 1-4 on the powerplay, while Potsdam was 0-3 on the advantage. The Cards won the shot battle through 60 minutes, outshooting the Bears 32-15 on the night.

The Cardinals improve to 19-2-1 (14-1 SUNYAC) and SUNY Potsdam falls to 9-12-0 (5-10-0 SUNYAC) as the teams will meet for their regular-season finale tomorrow, Feb.10 at 3 p.m. The game will be the Senior Day for Plattsburgh's five graduate students Ivy Boric (Newport Beach, Calif./Anaheim Lady Ducks), Tatem Cheney (Ottawa, Ontario/Ottawa Lady 67s), Julia Masotta (Tewksbury, Mass./Norwich), Nease, and Wasik who will be honored before the game for their respective careers.

The first two periods of action saw a hard-fought battle between the Cards and Bears, as the teams were unable to break past each other's goalies. Both teams also had a power play in each period and were unable to capitalize. Plattsburgh made it difficult for Potsdam to get opportunities, holding them to just 10 shots on goal through the first 40, but simultaneously was unable to capitalize on 23 shots on net in the period.

In the third period, the Cardinals finally took advantage of the power play, using the extra skater to their advantage. Wasik put a strong shot towards the net, and Wall deflected the puck just in front of the crease to put the Cards up 1-0 for her eighth goal of the year and third power play score of the year.

The Card's defense continued to hold over the next couple of minutes, as they forced a turnover around the 15:38 mark, springing Kasprzak for a breakaway score through the top shelf. The first-year's fifth score of the year gave the team a big insurance goal down the stretch.

With just over 20 seconds remaining, Potsdam cut the Plattsburgh lead in half with a Megan Teachout goal, but the ensuing faceoff was won by the Cardinals, allowing them to run the clock out for the few remaining seconds and hold onto the win.

Magalie Parent had a strong effort in net on Friday, making 30 saves and taking a loss, while Vicotria Proulx and Alana Palameta each tallied assists.
