CORTLAND, N.Y. – The No. 4 Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey team won a high-scoring affair with the Cortland Red Dragons, winning 5-4 in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) contest.
Tio D'Addario (Montreal, Quebec/Navan Grads) tallied two goals, leading the Cards to the win.
The Plattsburgh State Cardinals are ranked No.4 in the USCHO.com Division III Top-15 Poll.
D'Addario led the Cardinal offense with his two goals, while scores also came from
Adam Tretowicz (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Buffalo Jr. Sabres),
Ryan Bonfield (Kemptville, Ontario/Brockville Braves), and
Bennett Stockdale (Ottawa, Ontario/Alabama Huntsville). Stockdale's goal ended up as the game-winner, while
Jack Ring (Hingham, Mass./Northeast Generals) had two assists for the Cards for the second straight game.
Jacob Hearne (Ennismore, Ontario/Toronto Jr. Canadiens) earned his tenth win of the year, making 23 saves over 60 minutes of action.
The Cardinal's special teams units were outstanding, as they scored on two of five power play opportunities while killing all four of the Red Dragon extra-man opportunities. Plattsburgh also won the shot battle, outshooting Cortland 38-27 over 60 minutes.
Plattsburgh State improves to 17-3-2 (10-2-1 SUNYAC) and has a huge meeting with Oswego State tomorrow, Feb. 10 at 7 p.m. The Lakers sit just one point ahead of Plattsburgh in the SUNYAC standings, as the winner will be in a prime position to earn the first-round bye over the other in the SUNYAC playoffs. Cortland falls to 13-8-2 (8-5-1 SUNYAC) and will take on Potsdam tomorrow, Feb. 10 at 5 p.m.
The Cards wasted no time scoring in the opening period, as the second shift for Plattsburgh scored. Tretowicz netted a breakaway goal off a
Paul Bryer (Clarkston, Mich./Islanders Hockey Club) assist, as the graduate student beat the Cortland netminder stick side for the score.
It took nearly 11 minutes for the Red Dragons to respond, but they finally did with an unassisted goal by Johnny Facchini to knot the game at one goal apiece at the 12:33 mark. The Cardinals came up with a quick response to the tie game, retaking the lead less than a minute later, as Bonfield scored a breakaway goal.
Spencer Bellina (Medina, Ohio/Chippewa Steel) sprung the sophomore forward with a great pass from the Cardinal defensive zone, allowing Bonfield a great look where he finished bar-down for the score.
Cortland rattled off a strong stretch a few minutes later, scoring twice in less than two minutes to take a 3-2 lead into the first intermission, thanks to goals from Colby Seitz and Stephen Kyrkostas.
In the second period, the Cards used a power-play opportunity to pull even with the Red Dragons, as D'Addario tallied his first score of the game with a slapshot through the five-hole to tie the game at three goals apiece. The tie score held into the second intermission, as the Cards' defense turned it up in the second stanza, allowing just five shots from Cortland in the period even with two power plays for the Red Dragons.
The third period saw D'Addario once again come up big for Plattsburgh, as the first-year forward tallied his second goal of the game on a breakaway, burying a shot through the top shelf to give the Cards a lead they would not relinquish at the 3:11 mark. A late power play opportunity saw Plattsburgh seal the win, as Stockdale scored an impossible skating through and around multiple Red Dragons before slipping the puck past the goaltender for his team-leading 16
th goal of the year.
A late goal with an extra attacker cut into the Cardinal lead, but the ensuing face off did not result in any Red Dragon shot attempts, as the Cards escaped with the big win on the road.
Ronan Mobley made 33 saves in just under 59 minutes as he took the loss for Cortland, while Seitz and Kyrkostas each had a goal and assist.
