FREDONIA, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey team dropped a 2-0 contest to Fredonia on Friday night, sustaining a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNAYC) road loss to the Blue Devils.
Jacob Hearne (Ennismore, Ontario/Toronto Jr. Canadiens) took the loss in net, allowing one goal and making 21 saves.
Lonan Bulger (Yellowknife, Northwest Territories/Hobart) led the team with five shots on goal, as the Cards outshot the Blue Devils 32-23. Both teams were unable to take advantage of the power play, with Plattsburgh going 0-1 and Fredonia going 0-2. Charles-Anthony Barbeau earned the shutout win over the Cardinals in net, making all 32 saves.
Plattsburgh State falls to 4-5 (2-3 SUNYAC) and will next take on Buffalo State on Saturday, Dec. 7 at 7 p.m. The Blue Devils improve to 4-8 (2-3 SUNYAC) and next host Potsdam on Saturday, Dec. 7.
The first period of action saw a close battle as the Blue Devils took the lead at the 10:01 mark of the stanza, as Riley See scored, with Garrison Gagnon adding an assist. Plattsburgh outshot their opponent in the period 7-5, but Fredonia won 19 of the 29 faceoffs. The Cardinals had their lone power play of the game in the period but were unable to get off a shot.
The second period saw the Cardinals come out a bit stronger, as they had doubled their overall shot total, won 14 of the 22 faceoffs, and outshot the Blue Devils 10-7 in the period. Still, the Cardinals were unable to score, leading to a 1-0 lead for Fredonia heading into the final stanza.
Plattsburgh State was once again aggressive offensively, taking a 15-11 shot advantage in the final period, but were unable to find their way past the Fredonia goaltender. With the one-goal deficit the Cardinals had Hearne out of the goal down the stretch but could not pick up the goal with the extra skater. Eventually, the Blue Devils were able to get a breakaway chance in the final moments, as Luke Morris sealed the win with an empty net goal.
