Women’s Volleyball Falls in Final Match of the Season to Skidmore

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's volleyball team concluded their season in a non-conference match against Skidmore where they fell in a 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-6) decision at home on Friday night.

Friday marked the final match for junior defensive specialist Lexi Carfi (Syracuse, N.Y. / Liverpool).

Sophomore outside hitter Liya Girma (Sachse, Texas / Bishop Lynch) led the Cardinal attack with eight points registering seven kills and putting down one service ace. Junior outside hitter Maggie Lyon (Ballston Spa, N.Y. / Ballston Spa) put down four kills and one service ace for five points on the night. Junior setter Kyleigh Ganz (Phoenix, Ariz. / Seton Catholic Prep) distributed 16 assists to set up the Cardinals offense. Defensively Girma led the team in digs with 11 followed by junior defensive specialist Bridget Ryan (Mattituck, N.Y.  / Mattick) and sophomore defensive specialist KC Burke (Murrieta, Calif. / Northfield Mount Hermon (Mass.)) with five each. Up top Darby Collyear (Rockwall, Texas / Rockwall) and Iris Mulvey (Middle Island, N.Y. / Longwood) both had one block assist.

For the Thoroughbreds, Jazlin Chen led the team in points with 11.5 off of seven kills, four service aces, and one block assist. Angie Mozrall also had seven kills on the night while Catriona Hoelperl led the charge in assists with 18 and Athena Braverman led the defense with 12 digs.

The Thoroughbreds had a slight edge in digs 32-29 and had a 14-6 advantage in aces and a 3-1 advantage in blocks.

Plattsburgh State falls to 4-22 (0-9 SUNYAC) with the loss and concludes their 2024 season. Skidmore finishes out their regular season 12-15 (4-4 Liberty League) and are back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 12 as they take on Clarkson in the Liberty League first round.

The Thoroughbreds opened the first set with a 10-7 lead however a 4-0 burst for Plattsburgh led by two kills from Girma gave the Cardinals an 11-10 lead. After trading back-to-back points multiple times, a kill from Collyear tied the match at 14 all. The Thoroughbreds responded with a 4-0 run and took an 18-14 lead. A kill from Collyear brought the Cardinals within four but the Thoroughbreds scored the next five points and won the first set 25-16.

After a kill from Natalie Pederson put Skidmore ahead 7-4, the Cardinals responded with a 4-0 surge and took an 8-7 lead. A kill from Girma followed by a Ganz service ace put the Cardinals ahead 10-9 but the Thoroughbreds responded with a 4-0 run and took the lead 13-10. The Cardinals battled back and tied the match at 13 after Lyon put down a kill but the Thoroughbreds went on a 5-0 run that gave them a 21-15 lead. Another run for the Thoroughbreds put them ahead 24-16. The Cardinals scored back-to-back points but ultimately fell 25-18 in the second set.

The third set saw Skidmore open the match with an 11-1 lead. Back-to-back kills from Collyear and Lyon stopped the run, but the Cardinals still trailed 11-3. Another run for the Thoroughbreds gave them a commanding 17-3 lead as they ultimately won the third and final set 25-6.
