No. 8 Men's Ice Hockey Drops Non-Conference Road Contest to Plymouth State

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The No. 8 Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey dropped their first game of the season on Friday night, falling to Plymouth State in road action. The Cardinals led 3-2 late in the third period, but the Panthers scored three unanswered goals to pull out the win.

First-year Tyler Ramm (Westborough, Mass./Northeast Generals) tallied his first career goal, as Spencer Bellina (Median, Ohio/Chippewa Steel) and Jake Sacratini (Montreal, Quebec/AIC) each scored as well for Plattsburgh State. Ramm and Sacratini each had assists for multi-point games, while Jake Lanyi (North Salem, N.Y./Connecticut Jr. Rangers) had two assists for a multi-point outing as well. Eli Shiller (Toronto, Ontario/Wellington Dukes) played just over 58 minutes in goal, making 35 saves in his season-debut.

Plymouth State had a strong offensive attack that saw them unleash 40 shots, while Plattsburgh tallied 31. Neither team took advantage of special teams, as the Cardinals were 0-2 on the advantage and the Panthers were 0-1.

Plattsburgh State falls to 1-1 on the season and next hosts Simon Fraser for an exhibition on Saturday, Nov.9. Plymouth State improves to 1-2 with the win and next travels to New England College on Saturday, Nov. 9.

The Cardinals struck first in the offensive battle, as Bellina buried a shot from the point through several bodies, just over nine minutes into the game's action. Aaron Catron (Middletown, Del./Philadelphia Little Flyers) picked up the primary assist freeing the puck loose off the boards, while Joshua Belgrave (Burlington, Ontario/Burlington Cougars) received the secondary assist.

The 1-0 lead held through the first period as Shiller made 13 saves to keep the Panthers off the board. However, just over a minute into the second period, Connor Tait evened the score at a goal apiece for Plymouth State.

The tied score held for over 12 minutes, until Ramm's first career goal gave the Cards the lead back. Lanyi freed a puck along the boards in the corner of the ice behind the Plymouth goal and sent a loose puck towards the goal. A Plattsburgh bounce off the net left the puck on the stick of Sacratini, but he was hit in front of the crease, losing the puck. Ramm was right there to pick up the loose puck just outside of the crease and finished through the top shelf for the Cardinal goal and the first point of his career.

Soon after, however, Plymouth State tied the game back up, as Tait struck again, notching his second goal of the night. The 2-2 score held through the end of the second period, and through the first power play of the game from Plattsburgh, setting up the dramatic finish in the third stanza.

Plattsburgh took the initial lead in the third period, as Sacratini scored his second goal of the season on a three-on-two opportunity for the Cards. Lanyi freed the puck up in the neutral zone, allowing Ramm and Sacratini to rush the net with Bellina for the advantage. Ramm fed the puck to Sacratini as they skated across the blue-line, where he patiently waited to rip a top-shelf over a diving Plymouth defender and into the net.

The lead for the Cardinals was short-lived, as an 8:01 goal from Wil Redick tied the game. The game remained even until Luca Rea scored with just over four minutes to go to give the 4-3 advantage to Plymouth State. The Cardinals played nearly two minutes towards the end of the game with an empty net, but couldn't tie the game, allowing the Panthers to seal the win with an empty net goal at 19:32.2

Connor Strobel earned the win for Plymouth State making 28 saves. Tait had two goals and an assist, while Redick had an assist to go along with his game-tying goal.
